MI, Detroit - 12.05.09 Saturday - Shazam 3 - *REVIEW*

Back in 2000, I had the fortune of being scheduled to play WEMF's Tribe tent up in Canada. I went with Maisha and Lea and a raver-random. Now, hate to dog my sub-peeps, but ravers, especially then, weren't well known for their ability to plan, see things through, and have drama-free excursions. Lea, back then, was an up-for-it rave-chick; that's how I knew her. That's not to say that she was always surrounded by drama; in fact, quite the opposite. I had never heard her name involved with drama shenanigans. She always had a job and her own place, as far as I knew. Still, I associated her with being an always-up-for-it raver. So I was worried that things just wouldn't go exactly as planned.

Well, I had no need to worry. With the exception of some raver-shenanigans that involved Mr. Random Raver*, who had been instructed by the courts to not leave the state of Indiana let alone the country. But Lea was the perfect traveling companion. She got all directions, got an awesome hotel room not too far from the venue (and for a great price), she was great at introducing me and Mai to people from Ohio that she knew, whom we didn't, and even indulged Maisha's and my listening to Nika Costa's "Everybody Got That Something" over and over. Moreover, she didn't run out of money. There was absolutely no Tomfoolery or Haberdashery involved!

So it's no wonder that I felt completely at ease with the idea of going to Detroit with her a rave. The only thing I had to worry about was the weather, which was no colder than Indy. After all, she had planned it all out: Detroit, hotel, Windsor, gambling, hotel, party, hotel, home.

And that's exactly what happened. They had everything you could want in a travel buddy. So once again, hats off to Lea and Curtis for making the trip as smooth and painless as possible.

So what about the party, then? SHAZAMM! 3, by Knightbus Entertainment (??). Or was it Knightgroove? I can't remember. All I know is that I saw Wilhelm on the flyer and Wilhelm at the door, so as far as I'm concerned, it was a Wilhelm K. party. 'Nuff said.

If you want to read more about the sound, the DJs, the set-up, the shenanigans, the cool security, the performances, physix eating crow, and much more, you can check out the public note on my FB page. It should be public, like I said, so you don't have to be registered or a friend to view it.

agree with everything you said. this was by and far one of the best and funnest shows i've been to in quite some time, and since Indianapolis' 'rave' scene died out (through said crackdown), it's been very infrequent for me to get to go to a true rave style event outside of town. what's sad is that back in the day, i went to several shows in town here that were nearly comparable to this one, such as the Scarab show (i believe) that had Aphrodite w/Rusty, Q-bert, & Richard Humpty Vission, so i definitely felt a stirring to better times at home here in indy.
