U.S. Remains Opposed to Drug Legalization, Biden Tells Region

MEXICO CITY — Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. delivered a blunt message on Monday to leaders in Latin America who are contemplating opening the door to the legalization of illicit drugs: The United States will not budge in its opposition.

Mr. Biden, beginning a two-day trip to Mexico and Honduras ahead of a regional summit meeting next month, told reporters that he welcomed a debate over legalization, but then he knocked down the arguments in favor of it.

He said he sympathized with Latin American leaders who are frustrated over violence tied to the drug trade and with the consumption habits in its biggest market, the United States. But the few potential benefits from legalization, like a smaller prison population, would be offset by problems, including a costly bureaucracy to regulate the drugs and new addicts, Mr. Biden said.

“I think it warrants a discussion. It is totally legitimate,” he said. “And the reason it warrants a discussion is, on examination you realize there are more problems with legalization than with nonlegalization.”

Mr. Biden made his comments shortly after meeting with President Felipe Calderón of Mexico, who has said that “market alternatives” — a phrase that many have taken as code for legalization — should be considered by the United States if it could control the amount of drugs its citizens consume.

More problems for who?

Seems you need an account to read the full article, there's a BBC news one too.

the government is pursuing money (for a relatively few people) in the short term, at the expense of the long term sustainability of the government itself.

if the government were a person, i would diagnose it a suicidal, impulsive psychopath.

at the core of all of these systemic problems lies $$$ and our perception of it (everybody's).

I wish every country that we deal with would legalize drugs & piss off our (retarded leaders) here in the USA.........

I thought we may have a chance fora while with Canada - now Harper is fucking that up right and proper
Mexico is making good strides but I hope they aren't bullied by our government into submission.

I'm reading good things in general from some south american countries but the problem is getting anyone to listen to them and take them seriously.
US drug law and policies has an unfortunate stranglehold on too much of the world...

IF is the operative word.

Legalize drugs or not, you can NEVER limit how much drugs I want to do! =D The same goes for any other living, breathing human being.

Correct.

It's good that at least the discussion is happening. Even 4 or 5 years ago there wasn't a fraction of the serious discussion about drug laws that there is today. I think the ball is rolling, it's just a matter of time.

I'm glad it's clear that leaders of central american governments are utterly frustrated with the US's stance on their war on drugs...

Let the US gov oppose legalisation and the countries all around them just go ahead and legalise in their own countries anyway. The amount of debt the US and UK have now makes them probably the poorest countries in the world. A country with nothing has more than they do. So they are in no position to throw their weight around and tell other countries how to legislate any more. Ha ha!

And hopefully soon enough one of them will say, "I've had it with your war on drugs - it's causing more problems than it is fixing. I'm prepared to attempt to introduce sweeping reforms in relation to drug laws and policies."

you think our goverment would have COMMON SENSE by now.. people are gonna get high if they wana get high.. look at everybody dieing or just fucking themselves up on the "bath salt" bullshit... people will put whatever in their bodys its getting sad and they need help, their are way better ways to deal with the problems but they dont wana hear it.. even tho alot of people with power use to
