methylphenidate redosing

i have 18 mg concerta pills and yesterday I had a fun time and took about 54 mg for the night starting at 7 pm until 5 am... got 7 hours of sleep..if i were to take 72 mg or something like that again today, would I risk an OD or something because of the methylphenidate currently circulating my body? or would it be basically a safe thing to do because i have a bit of tolerance now ..?i want to redose today and go to a show or something and I'm wondering if
a) if i redose, taking my previous night into account, would i still have a good time or feel pretty good/good enough to where taking it would be worth it
b)is redosing safe, i have no tolerance and took in those 54 mg, so i guess now i do...up to how much can i redose safely?

i've heard some methylphenidate horror stories, and I don't plan on being able to recount one myself..

Re-dosing with methylphenidate is questionable, even within a single day it can render unpleasant effects. I would certainly suggest against using it again so soon, especially at a higher dose. It is great that you can even enjoy Concerta, because some people find it unpleasant due to the fact that it is slow-release methylphenidate, which is somewhat akin to re-dosing methylphenidate in a single day. So, if you want to keep that enjoyability factor with the Concerta, take breaks in between use. I would suggest a break of a few days minimum, but ideally wait longer for optimal effect. If you had fun with 54 mg, stick with that dose, or even try a lower dose of 36 mg - a dose that I would probably be more apt to recommend for you to avoid side-effects, serious and not serious. Methylphenidate is a "dirtier" drug compared to some, although not terrible if used sparingly and in safe doses, and if the user enjoys it. Try to do that, though, use it sparingly. Do not fall into a trap of methylphenidate addiction. It is not healthy to take daily, despite the fact that it is done quite regularly in medicine. Sometimes daily use is warranted despite potential side-effects and dependence, but there is A LOT of over-prescribing of stimulants for ADHD, and doctors are rather likely to script Concerta as a first-line stimulant. It is becoming very popular in the treatment of ADHD. All of that aside, do be warned because you are taking it recreationally (or even if you weren't), not to fall into an addiction. Also, keep hydrated when on methylphenidate (very important).

I would not imagine you have built up tolerance after just one day of usage (although I'm not familiar with taking methyphenidate I must say). You really want to take the minimum dose you need to get the effects you want, to prevent tolerance from building, but also to reduce the more unpleasant side effects stimulants can have such as anxiety, insomnia and vasoconstriction.


I would take the same dose and see how you go, or even try a lower dose. Better still, take a break before having another day on it, or you might find yourself rapidly addicted as alex said!

I'm taking 30mg of Adderall IR's twice a day for treatment of adult ADD. Are there any beneficial effects if one switches to methyphenidate? I've been on Adderall for about 3 years and never tried anything else so I'm curious.

Adderall is amphetamine and amphetamine is considerably longer-acting than methylphenidate. Some people have better results with methylphenidate extended-release formulations (like Concerta or Ritalin LA/Ritalin XR).

If your doctor is willing to let you try it - then there's no harm in trying it out. Personally I find that amphetamine is more effective but I know many people for whom methylphenidate is much more effective.
