Okay so I have a method of which I’m going to TRY and take 30 IR Ritalin pills and filter out the methylphenidate from the binders and such to get pure methylphenidate HCL. I used several different sources to come up with this method. And I also use ChatGPT to help organize the method. What I did not do was use ChatGPT to create the method. (just wanna make that clear.)
The method is as follows:
Methylphenidate Extraction Guide (IR Tablets, Ethanol Method)
This guide provides a refined method for extracting methylphenidate (MPH) from 30 immediate-release 10 mg tablets using 95–100% ethanol.
Materials Needed
- 30x 10 mg methylphenidate IR tablets
- 95–100% ethanol (food/lab grade, minimal water)
- EISCO 100 mL borosilicate evaporating basin (or similar)
- Portable 5000 mAh fan (for air-drying)
- 3 mL Luer-lock syringe (needleless)
- Coffee filters or cotton balls
- Small vial (for storing final product)
- Optional: Second ethanol wash (~3–4 mL) if clarity is poor
Procedure
1. Crush all 30 tablets into a fine, dry powder using a flat glass surface or mortar and pestle.
2. Transfer the powder into your evaporating basin.
3. Add ~11–12 mL of ethanol to the powder (about 0.4 mL per tablet). Swirl gently to mix.
4. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes, swirling occasionally to maximize dissolution.
5. Use a Luer-lock syringe to draw up the solution. Filter it slowly through a coffee filter or cotton ball into a clean container.
6. OPTIONAL: If the solution appears cloudy or contains suspended solids, add a second 3–4 mL ethanol wash to the original powder. Repeat filtering.
7. Transfer the filtered solution into your evaporating dish.
8. Place the dish under your portable fan in a ventilated area. Let it air dry fully (1–3 hours depending on airflow).
9. When completely dry, scrape the resulting crystalized residue using a clean razor or scraping tool.
10. Store crystals in a sealed vial in a dry location. Avoid moisture exposure.
Final Notes & Warnings
- Ensure full ethanol evaporation before collecting residue.
- Avoid any open flame near ethanol.
- No heating is used in this method. Allow natural drying with airflow only.
- A second ethanol wash is optional and only recommended if purity or clarity is poor.
- For research, informational, or harm reduction purposes only.
Filtering with a Needleless Syringe
If you are using a Luer-lock syringe without a needle, filtering the ethanol/methylphenidate solution through cotton is still effective with a few key adjustments:
- Use a small, tightly packed piece of cotton. Avoid large or fluffy pieces that will block suction.
- Pre-wet the cotton with a drop of ethanol to ease flow.
- Place the cotton either inside the syringe tip, or use it in a gravity funnel setup (preferred).
Filtering Methods
1. **Inside-the-syringe cotton filter (simple method):**
- Pack a small piece of cotton at the syringe tip (where the needle would go).
- Draw the ethanol/MPH mixture slowly through the cotton. Avoid pushing the cotton too deep.
2. **Gravity funnel method (recommended if syringe clogs):**
- Place cotton in a coffee filter or small funnel.
- Pour the ethanol/MPH solution through it into a clean collection container.
- Then use your syringe to transfer the clean solution to the evaporation dish.
Tips:
- Ensure the solution is fully dissolved and not sludgy before filtering.
- Let solids settle before drawing if needed.
- If clogging occurs, flush the syringe with clean ethanol and retry.
