What ever happened to Methaqualone ? You know... "Ludes". It seems like I haven't heard too much about it lately. Is it still being produced ?

Its probably still a thing in south africa. I bought some from there like 10 years ago via the darknet. But I've looked a few times since and was unable to find them. All there was, was some analogue in a ridiculously high volume.

Methaqualone is still readily available in South Africa and is produced locally as well as imported. Below is some general information on methaqualone in South Africa.
Currently, methaqualone is not legal in South Africa and can't be prescribed. The Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act 140 of 1992, also states that any other preparation containing methaqualone and known by any other trade name (e.g. Quaalude).
Information on purity unadjusted pricing is available through the Observatory of Illicit Economies in East and Southern Africa (ESA-OBS). The Global Initiative Against Transnational and Organized Crime have developed a data visualization tool that allows for the exploration of methaqualone price data overtime [note the the prices are not adjusted for purity]. Methaqualone is locally called "mandrax", which is also the trade name ("Mandrax") of a formulation containing methaqualone (250 mg) and diphenhydramine hydrochloride (25 mg). There has been limited quantitative analysis on methaqualone samples in South Africa. Sher (1993) and Grove et al. (2006) carried out quantitative analysis on seized samples form around the country. They identified tablets of varying composition and identified diazepam in several samples. More recently, some qualitative analysis [Alpha Bruker II] found similar patterns, with methaqualone, diphenhydramine and diazepam present in certain mixtures.
Lot's of variety in the local presses, with differences seen between and within geographic areas.

Well I live in the U.S. so I don't think I'll see them around anytime soon. And I wouldn't dare try anything that was made in South Africa. Same thing with Mexico.

saw it for sale only once back in 2016 from a south african vendor. the only review said it was cut to shit so i never bought it. haven't seen it since and i have looked.

While a couple of studies have identified mixtures containing methaqualone, diazepam and diphenhydramine, there's significant inter- and intra-batch variation, with relative concetrations of components within a mixture varying considerably. I'd say that it's not consistently being done, however, more recently, analysis of different presses (n=10; collected between March - April 2023 from 4 cities) found the following:
1) Methaqualone was present in 100% (n=10) of the samples;
2) Diphenhydramine was identified with methaqualone in 80% (n=8) of the samples;
3) One sample contained methamphetamine (along with methaqualone.
There's really no consistent pattern to the adulteration of methaqualone in the country.
I'm curious as to why you think this? Is there something particular about the country? In my experience, we have some incredible chemists who regularly synthesize a variety of psychoactive compounds. I think it's more about the inherent characteristics of an unregulated market, rather than a country.
