The Czech Republic has prohibited the sale of hard liquor after 19 people died and dozens were poisoned by methanol-laced bootleg vodka and rum.
The ban, issued by the Health Ministry on Friday, covers the sale of any drink containing more than 20 percent alcohol. The prohibition is temporary, but no indication was given when it might end.
Many Czech cocktail bars put out signs informing patrons about the ban, while supermarkets cleared their shelves of liquor following the announcement.
The measure builds on a previous restriction ordered on Wednesday, which banned the sale of spirits by street vendors and market stalls. Smaller businesses could be hard hit by the prohibition if it continues indefinitely.
The move aims to to curb the worst outbreak of alcohol-related poisonings in the eastern European country in decades. The first deaths occurred last weekend in the Moravian-Silesian region, 350 kilometers east of Prague. Authorities were unable to identify the source of the deadly drinks.
In addition to killing 19 people, another two dozen victims were hospitalized in connection with the poisoned liquor, many in induced comas or suffering from blindness.
Czech authorities did not restrict alcohol exports, believing that only local distribution networks were affected by the outbreak. The country's health ministry has contacted other nations over the matter as a precaution.

Wow prohibition in this country where everyone drinks madly.. fortunately lot of us only drink beer or wine.. I'll just keep on drinking absurd amounts of beer every friday eh.

However, it IS really serious, everyone thought that most of dead people were just homeless drinking home-made non quality liquers.. unfortunately among people who died were university proffessor or 28 year old mother of 2 children...

I wonder why anyone did, I dont know whether methanol is cheaper than ethanol, well I guess it is :?8(:(
 
I'm currently in Budapest, and there's a lot of people heading from here to Prague that I think will be disappointed but after 19 deaths it's nesscary.
 
Well I I do not think there is actually prohibition in true sense, I think its just media using this term to make things more interesting, the only rule is that its prohibited to sell >20% booze in czech stores but no words about importing or sharing your old bottles with friends. So you and your friends can simply buy booze in Hungary or Slovakia or anywhere and drink it here.

Some of my friends are gonna buy booze in Germany.

Stopping of selling here was absolutely necessary though, they already found another 65 bottles with high % of methanol that could kill/blind so many people. :\

Seeing as the average human cannot detect methanol in their drink, a temporary ban on high proof spirits is really the best option.

Methanol is quite insidious as a toxin in alcohol.
