Methamphetamine IS neurotoxic so why not amps..

Amphetamine is just as bad as Methamphetamine, if you abuse them long enough. Meth's very overrated and amphetamine is very underrated, it gets on my nerves so much. What applies to methyl-amphetamine also applies to dextro-amphetamine 80% of the time. My IQ is in the 135-140 range, no really a good thing if you ask me, and I've never been "made" into an ADHD case by teachers or a doctor. I chose to be prescribed Dexedrine and be labeled ADHD because it allows me to focus all my energies on thinking, but then I realized that kind of fucks with me because I have too much energy to focus on pure mental tasks. Plus, when you're labeled with such a "condition" you can use it as an advantage if you want (never have, no need, some kids will for unlimited ACT/SAT testing time, etc.). ADHD (There's no longer such a thing as ADD, it's all under ADHD with different "subtypes") is odd in the fact that people are given very powerful, very recreational drugs yet someone with a broken leg, a completely REAL diagnoses, gets shitty lortabs because pain pills are "addicting." Oh well, I like the meds but had to quit them for awhile, plus it's nice to have a bottle of legal amphetamine at your disposal.

There is a huge difference between using illicit meth to get blasted, stayingawakefordays ata time - and use a prescription drug in a controlled setting...yes, both have the potential to be neurotoxic when misused, and I'd even agree that long term use of prescription amphetamines can have some neurotoxic effects - I'm also sure someone can offer some journal enties that discuss this .....

My opinion? A LOW DOSE of PURE [xxxx]amphetamine taken orally isn't going to cause you much, if any neurotoxic damage ... sadly I'm the wrong one to ask as just thinking about meth makes my brain feel like I'm being shocked...

Anyone?

I agree, when used once in a while, amphetamines will cause no/barely any neurotoxicity. Of course constant (ab)use of any amphetamine is going to cause neurotoxicity, although meth more than others because it passes the blood-brain barrier quicker. I would also assume that being awake for days contributes to neurotoxicity - is this correct?

Definitly ... going extended periods of time with no sleep will greatly contribute to any neurotoxic effects - ya gotttas give yer body time to sleep and allow those neurotransmitter levels to return to something close to normal .. again, I would have hada better answer about 4 years ago but all that meth cooked my brain ....

Lol, yeah, I guess since it depleats dopamine and other chemicals it isn't too good if you never let your body regain them with sleep, since it's basically borrowing sleep from your body. It's like not eating, after long enough your body will start to lose muscles. So I guess not sleeping and eating are about the worse things you can do if you take amphetamine. I don't know why people don't just do it...Although meth keeps people up for a long time, so do dextro, I've been up about 5 days on pills, of course you have to dose a lot, just like with meth or any drug to do that. It just feels bad and empty after a long time being up. Kid of like the "Salton Sea"; "I've been up for 3 days, or is it 4...It's been 3 days, was it 4?"

Methyl-amphetamine gives Dexedrine and Adderall a HORRIBLE name. ALL amphetamines have the potential to cause neurotoxicity but not to the degree that most of you think. When most of you think about neurotoxicity due to amphetamines you think of the "tweekers" OR those who just greatly abuse it on occasions. First off, children under 9 are not usually prescribed doses of amphetamine any higher than 20mg a day or Ritalin. These are all oral doses. Someone who smokes/snorts/slams methyl-amphetamine fairly often is going through at least a gram a day (I knew tweekers who used close to an eight ball on some days). 1 Gram=1000mg of methylamphetamine compared to 20mg of dextro/levo amphetamine a day is a MASSIVE difference. This is not all...sniffing or smoking amphetamines is going to burn your brain out much quicker and easier than taking a 10mg Adderall with lunch.

street meth is cut... ur not getting 1000mg's of methamp....

Robd, I think they were talking hypothetically....

Even 500 MG's would cause damage of course, I think 1,000 was just an Arbitory number.

This may be true that once in a occasional use of meth/amps does not cause neurotoxicity, BUT, what about the 8 year olds who are on adderall 10mg a day or methylphendate (which is similar to coke) and who take it EVERYDAY. Now with a kid that is 8 years old, giving them amphetamines to keep them "focused" and not lazy is a little too much for me. I really believe that this does cause neurtotoxicity. Think about it, 10mg/day plus after a couple months, tollorence, so the pdoc raises you to 15mg, then so and so... up to 20mg a day or twice a day.

Also, don't you think it is a little odd that ADD/ADHD is only diagnosed as a disorder in the US of A and in Britain?
policitics, and money, and greed. Not real help.

anyone?

You gain a tolerence to 10mg per day. Upping the doage to stop your body from hurting itself is much different. I take 45mg/Day of Dexedrine (equal 60mg/day Adderall d-amphetamine-wise.) That's the higest reccomended dose for the drug, higher than most people I've heard of. That's probably not too good but 10 or 20 mg is nothing. As will all drugs, none is always better than a little though. Robd, about getting pure meth, I don't know about you, but all the meth I've done was as pure as you'll find. When it won't turn to powder no matter how much you crush it and just becomes smaller and smaller light-reflecting crystals, not baking soda-like and tasting it almost makes your mouth numb from the bitterness you know it's pure :)

Even so, let's put a tweeker who is considered to be recieving neurotoxicity and compare them with an 8 year old on amphetamine-type stimulants::::

Nobody can say exactlly how much someone "addicted to meth" uses per day for it all differs but I have never to know one or hear of one who uses anything less than half a gram of methamphetamine (this is after we toss any sort of "cuts" that may be found, which I have never used ANY meth that wasn't at least 90% pure.) I have known tweekers who go as far as an eight ball a day...even more. So we have a range of the very neurotoxic dose of methamphetamine at 500-3500mg a day. Uh huh.

Now we have your attention deficet child who is usually prescribed at least 10mg a day of d-amphetamine and never more than 45mg of d-amphetamine a day. Notice the tweeker uses roughly over 50 times more a day?? Also have you put into account that usually a meth addict doesn't put their crystals into a capsule but smokes, shoots, or snorts it?? That does a little number to you just as well.

I don't believe that the government would allow prescribing over 250 million scripts of amphetamine based drugs per year if it damaged the brain to severity. Yes, I do believe it is not the best thing for your brain but for those who REALLY have ADD...they understand why they prescribe them.

the "ADD" kids take it EVERYDAY though and the dose might start off as little as 5mg adderall or dexies, but then tolorence, you know? so it can go up to 50mg a day when they get older like say 14-17. and by then you would have been taking amps for 9 years EVERYDAY. now tell me that isn't bad.

Please not the with the GOV. knows best shit.

blah blah blah....yes I know I should have stopped right before I said that because you are right, the government doesn't know SHIT for the best.

And in response to the comparison to tolerance and meth addicts. Yes, kids with ADD have to take it everyday, and so do meth addicts. A prescription for 50mg of d-amphetamine would be a fault on the doctor's side because the dose isn't supposed to ever be higher than 40mg, sometimes 45mg. Amphetamines ARE neurotoxic, there is no arguing that, but 40mg a day of d-amphetamine is NOTHING compared to what it is doing to the people using it on the street. I haven't seen any experiments testing neurotoxicity from amphetamines on low doses but I would be curious to check some out.

This is odd, there are probably a lot of studies, but maybe the gov. and the pharm companies (same difference) aren't that forthwilling to put them up on their websites.

demorcracy yea, right. It's an EMPIRE.
