Hello. I am new to bluelight and I am about to make a decision which I don't really have anyone to consult. I have a pretty serious opiate habit and it is affecting myself and those around me. I'm really pretty tired of being this way but cannot afford to take off work in order to face the withdrawls. Unfortunately I have ran out of meds and now must make a decision whether or not to sign up to the methadone clinic. I fear that when I do this I will be setting myself up for something that will be much more difficult to quit later, but if I don't I may lose my job and worse yet, make it obvious that there is a problem.I never meant for this to happen but instead of being responsible and taking my prescription meds as they were meant, I acted selfishly and irresponsibly. If there is anyone who can relate and has some advice, please help me out , as I am unsure what is the best thing to do.Thanks

Well I went to the clinic and to be blunt...it was the most depressing experience I have had in a very long time.I had hoped to get some feedback or advice here but received none.I have made a personal decision to just go through withdrawls and tuff it out.I have to say it's really dissapointing that no1 bothered to offer any type of help, but from what life has taught me, that's just how it is.I'll be just fine.Peace

Moving threads takes time. You posted this late last night, so apologies if you did not get quick responses. People aren't always here 24/7 that can answer your questions.

Homeless -> OD

I would look into suboxone instead. I had a moderate opiate habit of on and off abuse for 10 years of 40-80 mgs a day of hydro ord oxy use. Suboxone takes away the cravings and does not make me feel high whatsoever. It makes me feel "normal", whatever that is. I never went over 6 mgs a day and that was only for the first 3 days. I am 4 months into this and I am at about 1 mg a day. It has been very helpful. Methadone to me was not an option as it felt like I would be replacing one habit for another. Good luck

i was on methadone for 5 years, i just switched to suboxone about 4 months ago.
if you have the means, START ON SUBOXONE.
alot of users say that suboxone sucks cuz it "doesnt do anything" whereas methadone will keep you in the clouds. but getting off the methadone is another mountain that will have to be climbed, so it's best to just go around it, if possible. plus, going to the clinic just puts you in contact with more people that you probably dont need to be around if you're serious about kicking....

you gotta way the pros and cons, and then do whats best for YOU.....

I would go the Sub route as well. With any of the above...you will have to face w/d's at some point...so keep that in mind..but i have heard that Methadone w/d's are simply awful.

Thank you all for responding.I understand that I had not posted the original with very much time for replies but I just didn't have any.Like some people probably do, I waited until I was about out of meds to make a plan B which was the mmt.In any event, like I said....when I went to the clinic I seen a lot of people who just didn't look very happy or healthy and it really discouraged me.
I just want out of this lifestyle and I had never meant for things to get this far. What started out as a simple trip to the dentist for a toothache led to me receiving a scrip, and like always, I was reminded that those little pain killers make me feel very good in every way. I was so productive at work and home that I began questioning whether or not I could be productive without them ( which I admit is just my mind tricking me into another excuse to continue using)...Anyways not only did I make connections for roxy, oxy, hydro etc.. I also acquired some 10 mg methadone pills which I have taken 2-3 a day for the last week on and off.My question now is do that amount of pills plus one 30mg dose at the mmt mean that I should expect to suffer the usual 5 days withdrawl from short acting opioids, or am I going to have to suffer the hellish methadone withdrawls that I have been reading about?Either way, I feel that the best thing for me is to just tuff it out and today will be my 1st day without meds in about 4 months. So to those with experience in this matter, please let me know what you think and if you can offer me any advice on making it through this any easier, it would really mean a lot.I know that no matter what, I got a wonderful prize at the end which is simply a life free from this addiction, so I know that it's going to be worth it.Again,...thank you to all those who offer help.Peace

Either methadone or bupe is a step in the right direction.

I personally was on bupe and was still using, I was always keeping my bupe dose low and jumping back and forth from h/oxy to bupe etc...

I got on meth and have literally only used 2 times in the past 4 months. Thats a plus. The negative part is the clinic, I am just now getting my takehomes. You have to follow their rules. Luckily my clinic doesn't test for weed..but you will be tested. Bupe doctors (atleast the ones iv'e been to in NJ never tested me not even to get on the program)..and I've been to four.

With meth you dose once in the morning..I feel like after 12 hours it's wore off, like I am not craving but I am just tired..don't feel like doing much etc..

WIth bupe you can dose whenever you want. It's also easier to taper.

I really want to switch back to bupe. I have a bttle of subutex waiting I just am at 80mg. My doc said hes switched people around 60 and someone at 160 before..but I wanna taper down a little then I just have to endure a weekend

If you are serious about stopping, go with whatever is available. Suboxone has advantages, but it is expensive. Methadone works fine, but the clinic system can be a drag. However, if you are killing yourself with drug addiction, any disadvantages from these two drugs are inconsequential. Your best bet is to get evaluated by someone(s) who know their stuff. Your goal, first, last, and in between, is to stop the addictive behavior, and the medication can help you do that by offering a reprieve from physical withdrawal and cravings.

ElmerBud:
In the future, you would be better off posting in Other Drugs or Basic Drug Discussion because I don't think that many people look through the homelss threads. That is why you see that all of a sudden you are getting responses now that it has been moved into Other Drugs.

I think that it is best to try to detox, and see if you can stay clean like that before deciding on opiate maintainance. Maintainance seems to be more suited for people that have been using for a long time at high doses, and have detoxed only to relapse.

Can you give us a better idea of your habit in terms of dosage and length? I see you said something about 4 months in your post. IMO a 4 month habit can be easily weaned off of by detoxing yourself with methadone or suboxone for 4 or 5 days like they do at hospitals.

OP, you are thinking 21 day not MMT right? Ive done the 21 day program and yes the clinic is a depressing depraving place. I would go in in the morning see the people fight to get to the door first and shit and think man go fuckin cop if you wanna be a junky and stop being such a pussy. Its really a good first hand example of why not to go onto maintence. But a 21 day program will help you i never took a single day off work. Its also cheaper than subs and imo is better for an addict becuase its not take home, and going to that shit hole everyday for 21 days is just one more thing that makes you wanna get off. The end of a 21 day program starts to get shaky so if 30mgs holds you which they give the first day stay at 30mgs dont let them bump you to 40mgs youll only be doing yourself a huge favor youll get a lot less ruff of a taper.

I would talk to them becuase at least here they only let you start on mon or fri which when i called i needed to start that day and ended up having to cop a few more days which i didnt wanna do. Anyways as i said try out a 21 day program but do not do maintence if you want a maintence rout then go with subs becuase in the long run subs will easier to kick if your on them for the long haul but with a 21 meth program WDs should be minimal especially if you stay at 30mgs the first few days instead of going to 40 as i said, also tell them you dont wanna know your dose everyday that way your mind doesnt play tricks on you hell i didnt even know when they started cutting me.

I called the methadone clinic and spoke to the director about 2 hours ago.I told him that I appreciate his help and what he does for people but that I just didn't feel it was for me.He spoke with me for a few and assured me that although their doors are open for me, that he'd really like to see me accomplish my goal of going cold turkey and beating this thing asap. After that I spoke to a couple of close family members and told them the truth.Although it was dissapointing to know that I've gotten to this place, they were supportive and happy to know that I am cleaning up.I made them aware of the fact that I will feel rough for the next 5 days and luckily I have arranged those days off of work.I also acquired some immodium and benedryl which I'm hoping will help ease the w/d symptoms.
As for my habit, I have used daily for the last 6-7 months and the amount of opiates has increased over time. It's nothing for me to take 200 mg of roxicodone in a day, and on the days that I didn't have roxis I got by on 10 mg dones of which I would take 2-3 or sometimes 4.I never did allow myself to mainline anything and took either orally or snorted(roxi's). I know there are people with a lot worse habits and part of my reason for stopping is to avoid becoming much worse.I just don't know what it was but the entire time I was in the mmt (about 2 hrs for intake) something inside me was screaming out "No!".I'm not ashamed to mention that by the time my "#" was called, I walked into that dosing booth almost in tears.I just cannot continue like this and never in a million years intended for things to become as they are.I think that the w/d's might provide me another good reason not to ever be like this again.I will post my progress in hopes that it might help someone or at least myself.I do appreciate those who posted responses and hope the best for all of us.I know that there is a much better life and I won't stop until I achieve it.If I succeed and I know I will, I know that I've got to be more honest with myself the next time I do really need something for pain.

I think you're making a good decision. With a fairly short history of addiction, you should be able to cold turkey a little easier than some. Obviously, it won't be easy, but like you said, perhaps that will be even more of a reason to stay clean! Keep the Immodium and Benadryl close by (be careful not to overdo the Benadryl chasing sleep...which is common).

Take frequent hot baths which will help with the cold sweats and RLS. You're looking at a few days of feeling like you have the flu and at times wanting to crawl out of your own skin....along with some anxiety and insomnia. Grab a whole bunch of movies that you like, preferably comedies and upbeat types, you dont want to depress yourself, as the emotional part of w/d can be rough...you'll be feeling a lot of guilt and sadness. That will get better with time, just like the physical part of it. Drink LOTS of fluids to replace fluid loss from the diarrhea.

I would also inquire with your doc about getting Clonidine to help with the process. It is a BP med that really helps ease the symptoms of w/d.

The very best of luck to you...congrats for making this decision. Better now than later, when things would have spiralled out of control even more. I'm glad you also have the support of your family. That is so important.

Keep us posted on how you're doing!!!

If you can cold turkey, that would be ideal.

Methadone is a potent opioid agonist with a long half life. The first time I experienced paws was after a 1 year stint on meth. With methadone your mu-opioid receptors are agonised 24-7, so your receptors get downregulated hardcore. Methadone is also a NMDA antagonist.

Congrats to you elmer, its a huge deal to realize when you've got a big problem, and then to tell the people you've tried so hard to hide it from. It takes some fucking courage, but so does cold turkey, just from my own experience, cold turkey might solve the problem for a month, a year maybe, but that craving always seems to come right back after I'd feel "normal" for a few weeks, I'd always rationalize that I could do it once or twice, and the withdrawl won't be shit. Of course when that one or two times turns to one or two months, your basically right back in the same boat you just got out of. I've been on methadone for almost 2 years now, started weaning off about a month ago, 3mgs a week, and I'm feeling great for the most part, just those nights when I feel it starting to wear off a little more, especially if I'd been doing a lot of physical activity (sweating) that day. Coming down off methadone cold turkey is hell, but with the appropriate medical advise from the clinic docs, its really nothin much, just takes a while. It took me countless tries at cold turkey before finally going to the clinic, and while yes, it can be depressing, and there's always those fucking fiends running for the door and flying through cars just to get there first, your there to BETTER yourself, and that's all that really matters. Most of the counselors and nurses that work at those places are generally so so nice too, and many have gone through the same physical addiction. Sorry to be so long-winded, but I really think methadone is the best choice, and subox being a very close second. I like that md gives you a short buzz, at least for me til I started dropping down. I feel like that's almost necessary in the beginning, just so you don't have the mental craving, especially at night, that's when it was always the worst for me, but I always had my dose to look forward to, or get me through. But yeah, congratulations again man, its a big step forward in your life, and I truly hope it all works out for you. Just don't rule out the complicated stuff just cause its complicated, big problems take hard work, and even if you gotta go to meetings once a week or every day of the week, it'll always be better than being where you were at, and in the end you'll feel so much better.

It's 11 p.m. and I awoke after about 4 hours of sleep which was no doubt aided by the 2 benedryl tabs that I took.I feel like shit but that's only physical.Mentally , I am determined and I really think that helps a lot.In the past when I ran out of meds and started w/d's without wanting to stop, it just seemed worse, if that makes sence.I have read and do agree that the mind is a powerful thing in this case.I don't enjoy feeling this way but I realize that after this is over I will be able to live without having to take pain killers in order to function normally. That along with the money I wont be spending is a huge reward, and this day and age, money is not something that I can afford to spend foolishly.
Anyways, I just wanted to take a minute to thank those of you who took time to reply. It really means a lot, and I do sincerely wish the very best for all of you too...Peace

Good luck to you ElmerBud. Stick to it and I know you will get past this and on to bigger and better things without a monkey on your back hitching a ride. Ive cold turkeyed 3 times off of a 200 dollar a day heroin habit and believe me when I tell you its worse than death(especially when your detoxing in jail), so it's great youve chosen to quit before your addiction has grown completely out of control. Looooong hot showers, exercise(you will probably have to force yourself to but its worth it), and any medications that will put you too sleep for long periods of time are all things I reccommend to ease the symptoms of withdrawal.

Good luck and I hope to hear from you soon, clean, sober, and happy.

I've been on methadone 5 yrs. everyone says it get u high or "in the clouds". the first time you take any drug u get that feeling including suboxone. after it gets in your system it want get u high believe me. the first few hours u may get a changed feeling or feel better but thats it,, if your a true addict,, if your not and tolerance is low then its gonna get you high, mdone was really intended for high tolerance addicts, if u dont take more than ur suppose too, and take it like its prescribed then after it gets in you good u want get high off it trust me, i've been on 120mgs for years and dont get high. i do feel better but its really just being functionable.

It's almost 8 a.m. on day 2 without taking anything.I almost feel like it's day 3 sence the dose at the mmt clinic seemed to do very little if anything that resembled what I usually felt like from taking pk's.Although I do feel crummy, it's not as bad as I expected. One thing that I'm feeling right now is a return of something inside that I can best describe as my "glow" .It may be all in my head but I don't think so.Although I could score me some weed or even some benzo's, I think I'm better off without that.I accept the fact that I got myself into this and I realize that I should pay a price for my actions. All around me I see people who enjoy a life without chemicals who appear to be happy, and that is my goal.I may be a fool for saying this but perhaps one day I can use this and other experiences with drugs to help others, but for now I'll just take things one day at a time.God bless...

yeah, dont get too far ahead of yourself cowboy. While life without drugs is surely a noble goal, you should take one thing at a time. After initial w/d your going to have to deal with PAWS, which is what takes most people out. good luck, and don't be surprised if that glow goes away, and don't worry either, because it will come back too. That's the thing about sobriety.
