Opioids Methadone vs. Oxycodone

Another TCA (Amitriptyline success story really?? Superb mate and I appreciate you sharing also, glad you are in a more positive place and making progress. Such a debilitating and under estimated disease, let’s fly the flag for others who are down but not out and yet to see some light at the end of the tunnel ?

You too mate here anytime!!

The worst thing about the 'opioid crisis' and how they limit prescribing is that even if some people were abusing their scripts they'll be a hell of a lot worse being kicked off and having to use illicit opioids.

And for people with severe chronic pain those dosages are ridiculous 40mg of oxy for the whole day??

Insanity.

I hope things get better for you guys and anyone else in similar situations

40mg of Oxy for a whole day is so insufficient u might as well not take them. Can't u repeatedly send ur self in and out of hospital to force the issue?

Yeah that’s what I thought, you never here it compared at all. One I have never tried. However I always go back to my Oxy it has my personality ????

Yeah, I prefer oxy or morphine. Methadone makes your tolerance rise really quickly without even getting you high. I used to save my weekend take-homes and take three on a Monday and I'd be nodding a bit most of the day.

Hey all,

The Oxycodone supply near me is limited and each month a few days I must go without until the pharmacy finally gets their delivery. I was on Bupe for pain for years to no avail. Methadone has been recommended by my doctor but it is ultimately my decision. Due to laws, my dosage of Oxycodone is only 40mg (10mg x 4) daily. The Methadone would be the take home tablets and not at a clinic, but I have zero experience with it.

I am leaning toward staying on the Oxycodone and being bumped up to 60MG which is the maximum allowed here but am wondering for those who have experience with both; is Methadone better for the treatment of chronic pain? The Oxy works better than Fentanyl did but the dosage limit is just making me consider Methadone even though I do not think ultimately it is a smart move. Thanks in advance

Hey Future,

You can find a pharmacy that can order in your medication. If they know you are getting a certain quantity you can request they order in whatever brand works the best for you as well.

I don’t have any experience with methadone but I think that would not be a good move.
Does not ring smart with me.
I worry about you even asking your doctor about that as they might just try to cut you off.

The pharmacies have been a problem lately for me too.
They had a problem with me cutting a pill in half and the price has gotten really high. My medication was $40 a month in 2010 and is now $390 a month. The increase in price went from $160 a month six months ago to now $390. Huge leap.
I saw news articles about lots of peoples medications skyrocketed.
People having to go without. :(

Take care. Hope you are doing well,
Have a good day!
❤️

Truly appreciate all the input here! I have military-related injuries that have damaged my thoracic nerve as well as causing complete scapular destruction. Had a labrum surgery that made it worse and led to having a permanently winged scapula. There is a surgery to tear my chest and attach it to my back but they say at best it is 50/50. The disc herniation and DDD is frustrating along with the RLS but yeah man the Crohn's is just as painful as the neck pain and sometimes even worse. I am wishing you the best brother! It does get better with time and some days the flare ups aren't as frustrating as others

Oh. That is awful. I’m so sorry and sad you live with that.
Thank you so much for your military service. I have so much respect for you on that.
It is you guys who make me and everyone feel safe and keep us safe!
So much love and many hugs to you.

No rec value then? Just holds you firmly up?

It has very limited recreation value. You can't feel it at all. Like, you'd never know you'd taken it. It just stops you getting sick.
I liked it because I could still get high on IV opiates like morphine and heroin but there's no worry about not having any because the methadone prevents withdrawal. It meant I could use heroin just a couple days a week and really enjoy it without any worries.

Which Opioid therapy will be most effective for a given individual is going to vary widely. Not to mention the fact that different Opioids are certainly more effective for different types of pain. Rheumatism, broken bones, fibromyalgia and everything in addition to and in between. I'm only telling you this for your own good. You need to experiment with different treatments directly to know how they will effect you. This, aside from our history of pharmaceutical competition in the western world (yes, and the Harrison Act, but this isnt a history lesson) is the very reason that we have variety in the first place.

You will need to cnduct a trial as others have alluded to. Otherwise you are just spinning your wheels with what-ifs. The only useful thing to do is to try.

Having to pay for medication at that price is ridiculous, if I move to the states that’s what worries me. No more beautiful free NHS ????

I will be studying this stuff next year at Uni, how they synthesise opioids like Methadone to do the heavy lifting without tickling the mu and K I believe!!

Yeah. 40mg Oxy would have me feeling kinda nice but I would need to take that like every 5 hours or I'd start withdrawing by lunch.

My Gp drags his feet every appointment. However My Consultant asks me every 3 months, if I need an increase or would like a change? Then the gp has to fall into line.

Drs who know their specialism inside out, and the chronic pain which accompanies many, will never leave you in unnecessary pain, they have a far more logical approach and don’t have to adhere to anyone but themselves thankfully!!

Thank you all so much for your replies! My fear is once I get on the Methadone I won't be able to go back if it doesn't help. In the US this fake opioid cri$i$ is evil. They had no problem putting me on 32MG of Suboxone but are hesitant about 40MG of Oxy. I have been taking 10MG 4x a day to avoid WD but I metabolize everything very rapidly. Fentanyl patches only worked for 36 hours so they aren't an option for me because my doctor refuses to be a reasonable human-being. I am hoping I will stay with the 40MG for 2 more months and than request to be put on the "max" of 60MG. It truly is a joke and I have done everything for my country yet am treated like shit. It gets very depressing.

I wish I understood more about your medical hierarchy and knew some way of getting you to a better outcome. Maybe you should move here bud, At least the NHS will not let this happen, or there are many options to avoid it.

DM me and I will give you some options to try ?
