Methadone for pain?

Also if you have ANY experience with pain in particular, how effective do you think methadone is compared to other opiates. EG noted that he didn't find it all that great a painkiller. Do others agree/disagree?
For chronic pain, methadone was by far the most effective drug I've found.
Oh, and what does it feel like? Of the opiates I've tried, which does it most resemble?
It's hard to explain because it's unique from any other opiates. It really lacks any euphoria, it's not something you'd really want to take for recreation. It's simply something that has a long duration while leaving you mentally intact (at low/reasonable doses).
Methadone is an extremely good pain killer. Side effects might be nausea and upset stomach.
And itching. Severe itching if you take too much.
Using methadone once or twice a week at a 20mg dosage wouldn't cause any significant tolerance, or withdrawal syptoms.
Using a relatively low dose of methadone daily, 20mgs, is not going to cause a significant tolerance or withdrawal symptoms either.
If you are trying to get high, sure, you're going to experience a tolerance fairly quickly using more than 3-4 times a week. But if this is solely about pain relief, you're not going to have that problem.
And as for using 2-3 times a week for pain at a dose like 20mgs... what the hell are you talking about?
Just because it builds up in your system does not mean it's having a pain relieving effect.
I've taken it for fibromyalgia. It had to be taken daily. I know others that have taken it for chronic pain and again, it had to be taken daily.
And as for withdrawal, I got up to 40mgs and the withdrawal was entirely insignificant compared to a 150-200mg a day heroin. I would have rather gone through the methadone withdrawal any day.
Based on my experience and the experience of people I know personally, I believe much of the information that goes around about methadone being so bad is largely bullshit.

Apparently, female rats metabolize methadone more than twice as quickly as male rats. They are under the effects for a similarily shorter period of time as well. This is good considering that I'm female.

but you are not a rat though.
With all of this positive info on methadon i am sure you will probally go ahead. Dont get me wrong it does have its advantages. As for what someone said about the w/d not being as bad as heroin this depends on how long you have been on it. Certainly, it isnt as intense but it is much more prolonged. As for the amount you get addicted to you can be addicted to 5mg and still get w/d, I wonder if methadone in the US is weaker than here, b/c i dont know anyone who would say that methadone is easier to get off than H. It must have all been in my head the severe withdrawal i went through for 2 months. Hhahhaha. Just look up a few stories on the internet about it. Dont get me wrong its a good drug, but to get addicted to its probally one of the worst opiates. And as for getting high give methadone ampoules a go. Its like eating smack doesnt do much.

Jumbo, I get 60 40mgs Oxycontin and 100 30mgs of MSir monthly for my chronic pain. In the past I've been presribed 340 Oxy IR per month and 180 30mgs of MSContin. I guess I have a compassionate Doctor!

Yeah, it must have been. 2 month withdrawals don't exist.

Ummmm, no you can't.
Absolute BULLSHIT. Have you tried this yourself for a significant lenght of time? Give it a go for 6 months then tell me how you feel.
I was on methadone maintenence for a period of almost 9 months, at a starting dosage of 60mg per day, weened down to 20mg per day at the end when I quit going. The withdrawal was there, but not anything I couldn't handle. The oxycodone addiction/withdrawal which made me go to the program were at least 5x as bad as the methadone withdrawal, and I was on methadone EVERY DAY for nearly 9 months, and quit cold-turkey when I was using 20mg per day at the end.

^^^^I have talked to people where their methadone withdrawal was close to that...one thing comes to mind is a lady who had withdrawal shits and other symtoms for 48 days...thats not two months but very close...
also i do not think that 5mgs of methadone is even going to touch the pain one bit, not even as much as tylenol...
why can't you go to a doctor? its beyond my wildest dreams that people think that they can't get help..
DO THIS---->go to yahoo...type in "Free healthcare' and then your state...sign up online and they will send you papers to sign...send them back and voila...you can go to the doctor and get all the meds you can dream of
whoever mentioned it above was correct, there are probably better places to get help for this other than the OD board..we are a bunch of junkies...some with pain some without....I mean don't get me wrong, every month I get a script of 60 oxycontin 40mgs..5 x 25ug duragesic patches...120 x 5mg endocets...90 x 10mg lortabs.... and 30 maxidones...and those are just the narcs, not including the copius amounts of shit I score on the street....i just don't think we are the best to ask about pain advice ..
there are tons of pain management sites on the web though...and you will probably see me at a lot of them..ahah...but anyway..GOOD LUCK

Without getting into an arguement about this the length of withdrawal is related to how long how much you used. If you dont beleive it can last months then you may want to have a look at a medical few studies. If you were on a tapering dose then the chances are you wouldnt have experienced protracted withdrawal syndrome. (see random link below) in the UK we get 1mg/1ml methadone and injectable methadone on maintainance scripts, ironicly, many users switch to heroin to get off methadone due to its short half life. Finaly, just about everyone i have ever know on meth all say the withdrawal lasts 4 times longer than H - this stands to reason as its half life is 4 times that of H!!!!

4. Acute withdrawal may continue to six or seven weeks and the protracted withdrawal syndrome may last for extended periods of time."
