Methadone and alcohol

I took 5 mg of methadone today and I plan on going to a party tonight. How long should I wait to drink? 5 mg is a low dose but I just want to be safe and not end up over doing it. Thanks for the help

please don't bump your own posts, I am not too familiar with methadone, try using the seach function and maybe you could find an answer quickly rather than waiting for someone to reply.

Please be careful though, mixing two downers is always dangerous IME.

I took 5mgs my first time I took Methadone & I certainly would never drink alcohol on this stuff. Methadone is very strong imo. Mixing it with alcohol has caused many deaths. It will slow your respiratory system down alot, just becareful.

I hate to sound like a buzz kill but be extremely careful with Methadone, it is quite potent when compared with other commonly prescribed opioids, and combining it with alcohol is only likely to cause further respiratory depression. The half-life of methadone is 24-36 hours (according to Wikipedia), so you should certainly avoid alcohol/benzos/opiates for quite some time.

If you plan on getting smashed, the alcohol will actually cause a significant decrease in the amount of methadone in your blood (hepatic enzyme induction), however, that doesn't mean it's safe. The combo could still cause fatal respiratory depression. If you have 1-2 drinks, it slightly increases the amount of methadone in your blood (hepatic enzyme inhibition).
