Metallica has been so overplayed, i'd rather listen to Megadeth but i acknowledge Metallica as the overall more significant band for their massive hits and genre bending.

Personally for old school thrash my go to is Testament's debut album.

Dat gang shout, dat guitars

Meshuggah's debut album also has a strong thrash element, awesome gang shouts and stuff

Also, Cliff Burton's Bass Solo: Pulling Teeth. Who else ever had a bass solo?
He did such an amazing job no one dared.
Cliff was such an amazing bassist, he was really into like hardcore punk like The Misfits and Black Sabbath, and I think he influenced a lot of their early sound. He had a real melodic way of playing that kinda transcended the typical confines of the instrument.

John Entwisle (I think that's his name) from The Who was a really good bassist as well with a lot of great live performances. Flea from RHCP is probably my favorite bassist. A more modern example of an amazing bassist for me is Thundercat, that guy is crazy good

there is a video on you tube of just the bass from the ride the lightning album, and you can hear what's going on a lot more than the mixed recordings... there is definitely a lot going on with that music.... if you're bored and like the technical side of music or want to be impressed by someone playing, i recommend taking a listen... the bass gets played pretty low in a lot of metal music. i personally never really knew there was so much going on listening to the mixed recordings.

I really love listening to Battery and Master of Puppets back to back.
The thing I found amusing, is that in the nineties when the guys cut their hair; their fans threw a fit over it.lol Why would guys care, if guys in a band cut their hair?

That's a great one! 😀🔥

It's Metallica for me. David Mustaine is a fairly skilled musician, and there have been some very good players in Megadeth over the years, but I just can't take him seriously as a songwriter or singer. He's also just sort of a dick and that puts me off from ever getting into them too much. Don't get me wrong, they do have some good tracks, I just think Metallica are faaaaaaar more advanced in the songwriting aspect of things. I definitely feel like Megadeth is a lot more mindless shredding and Dave making weird sounds with his voice lol. Whereas, Metallica and Hatfield in particular, has written many songs that actually resonate with me on a personal or emotional level.

To me, that is the most important aspect of any music, so Metallica is the choice here.

Gotta make a poll! Settle the debate!
I don't think there is much of a debate. Metallica is better. Megadeth is essentially just Dave Mustaine. What would have been great is if Metallica ever would respect their bass players. Even cliff got drowned out.

Dave Mustaine sober and on backing vocals, writing, trading off and on, lead guitar with James and with a bass player who didn't get drowned out or turned down in the studio. That would have been great. It wasn't as bad with Cliff. But what they did to newsted( mis) is sad. He was a great bass player. Lars just wants guitars and drums. He thinks he is the low end and that is ridiculous especially with two guitar players.

Listen to the song and watch the video for Breadline. I was shocked at Megadeth playing a song that powerful and slow and the lyrics are powerful and it is my favorite Megadeth track. Maybe because it is the least Megadeth song Dave ever did. The video for Breadline showed me Dave can have versatility but just doesn't want to. It showed a different side and is great and was over looked by most.
Still, Metallica had hit their peak in the 20th century basically.

One funny thing( about Dave Mustaine) is I have never seen a musician who had such a bad drug and alcohol problem be so prolific and functional. He can play really well and could sing if he wanted too. But faster and meaner than Metallica was all he was concerned with. But seriously watch the video of Megadeth's song Breadline. It is so different and made me really understand that Mustaine could do more and have a greater range. But it is really to late for all of them. They are in their sixties all of them. I mean really, are they going to be playing metal in their 70's? I first heard Metalica as a grade schooler. I heard their 3rd album Master of Puppets almost 40 years ago and then I also heard Ride the Lightning. I was so young I didn't know what to think. Other than I liked it but my young ears were barely able to handle it.
Still neither band or any other has or ever will top the greatest hard rock song of all time. Welcome to the Jungle. Too bad Axl sounds like shit on stage when he bothers to show up. I know of no metal or hard rock song that is meaner, or better.
