i notice a lot of stuff in this thread is kind of borderline metal or not traditional metal, so i'm gonna post some music that i've always considered more hardcore than metal, but i still think this stuff has some metal roots, so i'll post in this thread:
DYSTOPIA:
i remember being like fifteen and into starting hardcore type bands, none of them i really felt were that great, not what i was going for... but right when i heard this i knew it was the sound i was looking for. i completely gave up on trying to play hardcore... dystopia was like the thing. i've never heard anything like it.. i wasn't sure if it was violent before, part of me didn't like it, but now i listen to it and get this great sense of pride, like not that i want to commit acts of violence, but if it'd help i feel like i'd let some one beat me to death or something.... dystopia has three albums that you can listen to on you tube, just search "dystopia full album" and they will appear. most of it sounds the same. the drummer and the guitarist switch off singing and i think that creates a lot of awesome natural rhythm. they sample a lot of stuff from movies and news clips too that breaks up the monotony of the music and it all really fucks with my head. i'm not sure it's good, but this shit is so hard and crazy. how could this have not been made with how bad the world is.
SPAZZ:
spazz was what i always wanted to copy for my first hardcore bands. i relied too much on the bassist and wasn't really smart enough to compose such songs... spazz is like circle pit punk hardcore and then the most awesome mosh parts of any hardcore band. the above release is one of their more successful i think. i could listen to any spazz music all day though. for me spazz doesn't really remind me of violence, more of muppets going crazy.. listen to this release with the band floor, the drummer of dystopia is on guitar for floor. floor is the second half of the record. i love floor. that's my favorite song by them. most of their full length album music bores the hell out of me, but i love the dude yelling and complaining on this release gets to me. the feedback is crazy too.
i could probably list some more punk and hardcore stuff, but i'll skip over to the screamo genre which i think has some roots in metal.
MAKARA:
tons of distorted octave chords with vicious feedback. if i had to describe one sound as "psycho" this would be it. reminds me of bad times in a mental institution. the bass is harder than any band in the screamo genre as well... at the end of one of their split records, they play this super relaxing emo type guitar that reminds me of metallica's "one" or "fade to black" with out guitar soloing though. kind of freaks me out, but still cool. i didn't really like makara when i first heard them when i was seventeen, i registered that it was like the hardest of the screamo genre, but it just seemed like bad vibes to me... it messes with my head when i listen to it today. i must like it........ some day i will make a thread comparing what i think is screamo and emo. genres i don't think are really fully understood by most. i think most people think emo is like fall out boy and stuff.
