Hi guys, Steve Cannane from Lateline here at the ABC. I'm looking at doing a story on Mephedrone and was hoping to tap into the collective knowledge of those who use the Bluelight forums. If anyone can help me out with information and insights my email is [email protected] Obviously any conversations treated as confidential. cheers, Steve

As said in the other discussion thread, MrIbis said he would be willing to do an interview if he knew a bit more about what your story was trying to accomplish, and I think he is a very ideal choice :)

Yeah, i've spoken to Steve on the phone now, looking to do a TV interview next it seems... Anyone with any insights onto what i should bring up feel free to PM me with suggestions - i've got alot of my own material there to provide, but any other perspectives would be appreciative.

Maybe read through the threads in the Advanced Drug Discussion forum before the interview? Most of the content there is way over my head as I don't have a chemistry background but I'm sure you could find a few points worth bringing up in the interview?

^ which is kind of cumbersome now at 31 pages or:

http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?t=474534

^ a couple of pages on the science & metabolism of the drug

Let's hope this ABC "story on Mephedrone" isn't just another sensationalist, ill-informed, media beat up like all of the Meow-Meow articles being spewed forth from the UK press... there'd better not be any mention of some bloke chopping off his scrotum or whatever other urban myths are springing up about 4-mmc.... 8)

Mr Ibis: you were probably going to mention this but if you could talk about:
* The role that poor availablility of MDMA in Australia and how mephedrone has become more availabile, particularly when it is sold as 'MD caps'.
* The fact that many people on bluelight and in the wider community were not aware of its legality, and even the media would run stories saying it was legal. You can bring up the point of how it might be unfair to prosecute those who have imported it when they were giving such conflicting information.

Hey Steve,

Firstly I would like to think you have read all the information posted in this thread, and considered all the HR out there about this drug.

Secondly I would hope, and seeing your from the ABC, that you take your time and ask yourself, why is this drug popular now? Whilst you think about that, you should consider people selling this as MDMA, the drop in MDMA quality, the mindset that if it's legal it's safe.

These are all interesting takes on this drug, and I hope you can deliver something more than 4mmc is killing our children.

Seeing that your hear on BL gives me some hope. Feel free to PM me if you would like some more insight into 4mmc, and my opinion on Australia's drug landscape and the forces that shape it.

Copied from the other thread. Just incase it will help. Also going to change the title of the thread to something more specific.

Just a heads up to people, it seems half the nations media is running a story on 4mmc this weekend.

If you want your views heard, best to email them. But remember, don't risk incriminating yourself for your 10sec of fame!

edit:

I spoke to one jurno (not this one) with emphasis on why it's popular. So delt with the ususal issues, mdma drought, profit margin for dealers, being sold as mdma, the dangers of the metabolite, the morish nature of it, the risk with dosing >500mg and plus.

I left him with its being sold as mdma, the metabolite is dangerous, and if your going to use it stick to <500mg

Even though camera buff here doesn't seem to have had any adverse reactions to mephedrone, it might be worth conveying that since little is known about the health risks associated with binge use, poly-drug use or ongoing use of any sort... this makes it more of a gamble

With MDMA for one, there is (and continues to be) a fair bit of research into its effects both long and short term

Congradulations MrIbis :)

Everyone has covered all the issues that I would, and I'm sure their not conflicting with what you had in mind. Them being falsely sold as md caps and the mdma dry would probably be my focus.

I think where phystaco said "* The fact that many people on bluelight and in the wider community were not aware of its legality, and even the media would run stories saying it was legal. You can bring up the point of how it might be unfair to prosecute those who have imported it when they were giving such conflicting information. "

Thats a good point, aslong as you keep it within reason, obviously someone who is importing kilo's of the stuff should've done more legal research 1st. But someone who has just ordered a couple of grams thinking it was legal should be given some leneancy.

Also I think the ABC will do a fine job, their media is far better researched then the garbage on the other free to air channels.

hyroller; you callin me camera buff?

There are a few reasons i'm doing this, i have the interview on monday btw - and i'm quite happy to do it - As i have liased with senior members of the site re; public image of bluelight and this is a major concern of mine, i may also bring into question the issues surrounding the internet filter and effects this has on harm reduction.

I'll take into note everything in this thread for the interview, so if anyone else has any concerns (though most of these points have already been voiced in the first phone conversation - either mentioned by steve or myself) please let me know by PM or via this thread and i will pass them on - Preferably before tomorrow, because thats when we're to run through the interviews fine points.

Thats cool MrIbis. Will this interveiw be televised?

some points to perhaps mention:

there is a constant stream of new research chemicals being produced. even if mephedrone distribution can be controlled, something new (perhaps outside the reach of the analogues scheme) will replace it. this only results in people ingesting drugs with even less known about side effects and long term damage.

with the general public's mentality on non-alcoholic drug usage, there is no foreseeable end to this harmful trend. what is require is a more honest and mature approach to drug policy, with prevention of harm being the number one priority.

Love it! Johnnyonelove for PM=D

MrIbis?

Any chance you no when it's going to be televised? Keep us up to date ;) Good luck

re; telivisation, i'll let you know when its likely to be shown, as im sure i'll be informed.

My main goals are this;

To address the impact mephedrone has had because of the mdma crisis. To emphasize the impact and possible dangers it has on the younger generation, as well as the positive effects it produces, the general issues related to 5HT2A Agonistic drugs on the miral heart valves, and its toxic metabolite. Though i've only known a few people to produce the cardiovasuclar side effects - i know its a problem that needs greater attention.

To dispell the rumours regarding self castration etc, i voiced my opinion about this, and the previous journo who spoke to a member of bl and the journo twisted his words and mentioned that shit, which wound up on AFPs media release.. won't say who but yeah...

And to really promote the issues related to BL, Internet drug forums, and possible methods that could be used to market recreational drugs legally in a controlled environment. I've made some posts about this prior - and i don't see it happening soon, but solid policies could see even us as a whole creating a political party with a whole load of different views and policies regarding freedom of information, drug legislation and other important issues.
