Mentally ready for a LSD or PD experience?

I've experimented with a few drugs in my past, but never one of the better PDs (shrooms once, didn't really feel anything).

I've heard very awesome things about LSD, and also mescaline, but I was wondering.. Is it better to be in a certain mental state, or have things on your mind?

Should I read some interesting books, try to solve challenging problems, or listen to some music in the time before my trip?

a quote from timothy leary -

"ACID IS NOT FOR EVERY BRAIN .... ONLY THE HEALTHY, HAPPY, WHOLESOME, HANDSOME, HOPEFUL, HUMOROUS, HIGH-VELOCITY SHOULD SEEK THESE EXPERIENCES. THIS ELITISM IS TOTALLY SELF-DETERMINED. UNLESS YOU ARE SELF-CONFIDENT, SELF-DIRECTED, SELF-SELECTED, PLEASE ABSTAIN."

(sorry for the caps)

i think the fact that you're curious about trying it is enough in itself. Do some reading, perhaps some experience reports on erowid. Nothing can really prepare you for what you're going to experience though... :)

just be very mindful of set & setting. Take the drug in an environment where you feel 100% safe, with people you completely trust. Wait until you're familiar with a drug before you venture out into the world & nature with it, practicing at home is a good bet. Besides carpet looks cool as hell when you're tripping. lol

The best mind set is being happy and confident with your place in the world. Don't take it if life is getting you down, you just had a fight with your girlfriend or you are trapped in your bedroom scared that your parents will walk in at any minute. LSD is useful for expanding your mind and dwelling on life's greatest questions but sometimes it is equally as fantastic to laugh and giggle and be happy that you are alive.

Trying to push it in a certain direction the first time you take it is difficult and often pointless. Like driving a new car you just want to experience and become comfortable with it's effects. After a while by all means use it to mold your mind.

THAT should be stickied for all posterity in the big and dandy LSD thread. Very well spoken :)

I recommend doing shrooms with good friends, if you can. It seems to be great for forming a 'connection'. In my experience anyway.

I think that you should feel ready, and not go into the experience with apprehension, worry, or fear. If you go into the experience with a mentality of respect and use psychedelics as tools instead of playthings, they will treat you well in return. It is when psychedelics are used as toys that they slap people across the face....

That being said, being "ready" for what some of these experiences entail is next to impossible, the potential depth and magnitude of these experiences goes beyond the comprehension of those that have never been there. Indeed, even if you have been there these experiences are such that words don't do justice. I thought I was ready for my first acid trip, did a lot of reading and research.... That night ended years of depression and allowed me to see life for all the reasons there are to be happy....

It was overall an amazing experience, and one that was beautiful beyond words.... But there is no preparing yourself for that sort of thing...

there definitely is a certain threshold you must reach in your life,
before you start really understanding stronger PD's.
safety aside, you should wait until your ready because it will be a peak moment in your life,
like falling in love for the first time or dying,

you can waste your first kiss on someone unimportant and die for a horrible cause,
or you can wait and live with meaning and valor,

all these choices play a role in a trip,
only you can ask yourself if you are ready,
if there is any hesitation then probably not,

things you can do to be safe:
be in a safe, controlled environment for the duration,
have a friend close by who has your best interest in mind.
have activities ready and most important,
PLAN AHEAD.

i suggest doing lsd indoors for the first time,
and if you live with your parents,
don't do it when there home
because you will be trying to hide.
and thats not what its all about,
be respectful,

most importantly though,
do not underestimate the power of strong pd's.
they have so much potential to be VERY intense,
and not the good intense where you love everything,
the intense on the weird side of things,
where your mind state changes to somewhere so utterly alien,
you are scared and want it to end, but can't for another 5 hours...

things you can do to prepare,
meditate,
read,
educate yourself on the drug in question,
practice patience, and have confidence in your choice to partake.

good luck.

(shrooms once, didn't really feel anything)

Either (a) didn't have actual potent psilocybes, (b) didnt do enough ["dried" dose of "fresh" shrooms perhaps?], or (c) you are on a med like some antidepressants that blocks effects of that kind of psychedelic. Something must have been wrong. Unless one of those three things were true, a proper dose of shrooms WILL function as expected. No two ways about it.

Anyway yea when you do get something that works, don't "plan" anything, that really never succeeds, the mind will wander totally away from any pre-plan. Have some various types of music to try listening to, relaxing with eyes closed. Be prepared to experience a new "relationship with reality" is the only thing I can honestly say to expect.
