Before I was like a slave, babysat by television sets and false pretenses
I was like a sponge sopping up everything in sight
Never questioning the powers that be, as if they were God in the flesh.
I felt as if I were trapped inside some kind of somnambulate creature
Eaten alive by its deception and inequality like a snake devours a rat
I screamed from the depths of my soul for freedom and mercy
Being poked, prodded, and raped of innocence to ensure the perfect machine.
I struggled like a baby struggles for love
But to no avail, my attempts were like broken glass under a heavy boot

Now I have rid myself of the thorn that once hindered my side
I’ve broken free of the ties that bound my wrists like concrete
I’ve found a medicine that I cannot reject
It is like morphine to my aching, callused body
Like a guiding light through infinite darkness
I no longer have to hide within my fissure of fear like a coward
It embraces me as a father embraces his child
Love, the perfect filter for an imperfect heart.
