At the end of the day, how many men per year are injured in the types of situation you describe? Compare it to the number of women who fall victim to domestic violence and I'll bet it's a drop in the ocean.

The type of men who would attack another guy who was involved in a public altercation with his partner without being 100% sure of the facts are the type of men who look for any 'just' excuse to be involved in violence. It has nothing to do with male / female equality and everything to do with bravado and bloodthirsty thuggery.

My gf used to like me to knock her about a bit when we f*cked. Slaped her (lightly) across the face a few times, some minor choking, biting, hair pulling, name calling etc. She liked it and if someone is going to encourage me to beat the sh it out of them then who am I to not oblige. It was even more fun when I knew I was going to break up with her shortly.

I would have taken issue with a load of men steaming through the door on some crusade trying to break it up though. Too many heroes in this thread.

It's a stupid thread for a reason though: the underlying assumption is that it's somehow OK to hit men, and that women are somehow getting special treatment. It's not OK to hit anyone, except in special circumstances (self-defence, revolutionary tactics, hysteria) and even then it's not OK to use excessive force. In light of that, it seems a bit odd to ask if it's OK to hit women.
