MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities said a Memphis grandmother was arrested after she called 911 for beer.

A police affidavit shows that 68-year-old Rosie M. Pate was taken into custody Wednesday night, charged with domestic assault and making a 911 call in a non-emergency situation.

Police said Pate became angry with her granddaughter and slapped her with an open hand when she wouldn't buy Pate beer. The affidavit said Pate then dialed 911 seeking "police assistance in getting a beer."

Pate was released from jail on her own accord and she has a court date Friday. Court records do not show if she has a lawyer.

I agree that this is not really news worthy, however it is news. The 911 system is a government organization that provides a public service. The abuse of that system should be reported and punished. I think the main reason it became a news story is that it is funny, at the same time sad and pathetic, but funny all the same. Most local papers have a Crime Blotter or Crime Report section where they publish the activities of the local PD over the past week or so.

My college paper had one every week. It was mostly small things like; minor in possession of alcohol, public intoxication, possession of marijuana, and traffic violations. Every now and then, there would be a real crime and there would be a full article about it. One time there was a series of thefts on campus and there was a report about the investigation, telling everyone to be extra careful with their stuff, lock their doors, etc. They had another article a couple weeks later when they caught the guy, they got him because he was filmed by one of the cameras at the dorm he robbed. I really hate that there are cameras everywhere now. Even though they can help solve crimes it sucks that privacy is a relic of the past.

It's ok, the insiders can turn the telescreens off whenever they want.

Alcoholism can get ugly. .

I check the county arrest report every now and then because unfortunatley lots of people I know end up on there but we get a couple of these false reports every month. Really is a stupid move to make a joke of emergency services.

This. The mcdonalds I worked at had 4 cameras in the lobby. Why the fuck they would need them out there who knows.
There is like triple that in the back on crew constantly. Feels like a prison lol the days of free nuggets are long since gone. Smh

It's ok, it's for your safety! Sheesh. Some people don't know how good they got it. Down with Easta.. I mean, Eurasia!
