I live in Sydney and I havent lived in melbourne, but from a tourists viewpoint:

The suburbs are nicer but going out is more annoying. everything EVERYTHING in melbourne is decentralised.
In sydney you want out you go into town, the cross, oxford is all within walking distance. In melbourne you need a committee meeting to plan the exact timetable of the evening so you can get from one side of the city to ballarat, across to dandenong and back in time for the good DJ.
Sydney has better bars and cafes too. i like aesthetics more than anything. And nothing beats the harbour.
Melbourne has its cool kinda of trendy thing going on.... Sydney just quietly gets along with being sexier.

Melbourne. Mainly because they get all worked up when ever this argument gets raised. After all, who in Sydney has the time to bother really fighting this shit out? We have real things to do.

Notice how the nouveau riche flaunt their money the most where the people who have been wealthy for generations don't feel the need to show off? It's kind of like Melbourne vs Sydney. We know we're better so have nothing to prove.

Pfft, I would hardly call Sydney pretty and the good restaurants are few and far between. I love the city but I disagree with those points.

yes, but (and i say this as a Perthian of olde, and i still love the place) what to do

on a monday/tuesday night when everything is shut??
stay home and veg in front of the tv with your dinner on a stable table, your slippers on and a carton of crownies...or theres always the casino where there are more pokies than people :D Or the movies. But yeah, I digress, we cant compete for Monday night fun.

what if you want dinner at 10pm?
Who eats dinner so late anyway? The truck stop on Abernethy road does an excellent lasagne and chips when desperate, late and tired, but again, Melb has us beat there.

or if you work until very late and need to go shopping?
theres 24 hour shops around but I couldnt think of anything worse than wandering around Coles at 3am trying to decide on what food I wanted to eat for next Thursday's dinner. Answer= dont work late! :D

or you want to swim in stinky water and get dirty needles in your feet?....
Theres bluelighters over here, I am sure one of their local bathrooms will provide all the fouled water and needles your feet require. Failing that- maybe Kwinana Beach.



pokies, while the sourge of the earth, can be deftly avoided if you wish.
Cant be done here, theres nothing else to do on a Monday/Tuesday night besides casino/tv.


Perth is boring, really boring, but a nice place to live regardless- but Melbourne gets my vote as the better city- its just so much fun and so vibrant.

^^ is Ambar, Perth any good?? it apparently made the worlds top nightclubs just beating home in Sydney (funny how none of the Melbourne clubs even made the list).

^Ambar is a pretty good club, its got excellent DnB dj's and hosts regular DnB gigs for visiting artists- a few of the local Bluelighter DnB fanatics go there all the time, Im too old now. But the music scene being what it is over here, a large percentage of places seem to be playing nothing but DnB these days so it might lose some of its uniqueness- not that Im complaining, DnB is wicked. :D
