"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
Remember melatonin? In the 1990s, the dietary supplement was all the rage among frequent fliers, promoted as a cure for jet lag. Now it is back in vogue, this time as a prominent ingredient in at least a half-dozen baked goods that flagrantly mimic the effects of hashish brownies and do so legally. At least for now.

With names like Lazy Cakes, Kush Cakes and Lulla Pies, these products are sold online and at stores such as 7-Eleven, Walgreens and smoke shops.

Although the Food and Drug Administration hasn't approved melatonin as a food additive or deemed it safe, the dessert makers are marketing their products as a harmless way to promote relaxation.

Am I wrong getting a "this is bad" impression from thr article?

People can relax with a legal and safe recreational substance. Why don't they look at their beloved alcohol the same way they view Lazy Cakes? The world would be a little bit better of a place. Dare I say it.... they should take a chill pill?

Oh boy... the second the Gov gets a hint of there being a product that makes people feel good, it gets stigmatized and all law-ed up on. Tis bullshit I say!

I wouldn't call melatonin recreational by any stretch of the word.

I didn't read the entire article cause I get the gist. But like anything else, Melatonin shouldn't be abused. And I think the way it's being advertised recreationally isn't sending out the right message. It's annoying what some people will do for money.
I wonder if this will result in a ban of it lol.

After the 12 hour shift I'm about to do, maybe I'll try one of these "Lazy Cakes" to relax an watch some TV before I fall alsleep. I'm not using to TO sleep, or for any kind of medicinal purpose, so that's using it for it's intoxicating relaxation effect. Recreational.

If they ban this too I won't be surprised, this country is run by morons. I still have my endogenous melatonin so then I'd be illegal too haha.

Actually the country is run by incredibly smart people and the vast majority of the civil population are morons.

i find melatonin or at least the brand i have on the night table, ineffective . so much so that i can not perceive it doing a fucking thing. same result with horrible smelling Valerian root- nothing at all.

Sad to say, before I had much experience with psychoactive substances, I have used melatonin in high doses for recreational value with some success. I'm talking like 13-14 years old, I would take a small hand full of them along with valerian roots, and i noticed it brought back closed eye visuals reminiscent of my DXM trips, especially if i did this within a week or two of tirpping. Melatonin (along with valerian) also potentiated Ambien nicely. I guess its more of an "intoxicated" than a high, but it did make for some interesting nights and free flowing thoughts written down. Better for potentiating i guess than actually a high of its own..

why not buy booze instead? I don't understand the logic behind using melatonin for relaxation.

same company makes:

These are like those stupid "anti-energy" drinks or that fake codeine syrup stuff (they even call it drank I think). Generally the ingredients include stuff like melatonin, valerian root, maybe kava kava, stuff like that.

Nothing at all about them are harmful, shit, some of them might be good for you. Nothing about them gets you really high either, melatonin does nothing except make you sleepy and give you cool dreams.

Basically all these fake brownies and stuff just make you a bit sleepy and relaxed. No fun but no harm.

well actually:

there's been some speculation that taking too much melatonin for an extended period of time can throw off your bodies natural production of the hormone.

Kava can be toxic to your liver as well if it is not prepared properly. The stems and leaves contain trace amounts of a hepatoxic chemical not found in the root, so unless you know that only the kava root extract has been used there is some chance for hepatoxicity.

I don't know of any adverse affects from valerian however.

that said, I doubt that the concentrations of any of the above compounds in any of these over the counter relaxation drinks/foods will have adverse effects unless you ate them nonstop everyday

Lol what's in that one? Caffeine?

There's a corner store near where I live that sells "Relaxation Brownies" right next to "Energy Brownies". While the ingredients are still not completely listed, I'm pretty sure there is 200mg or more of caffeine in each one.

I've tried the "Drank" brand of those, its loaded with melatonin (and other OTC sedatives such as valerian extract). I think it also has a lot of vitamin C and just knocks me out. Works wonders for coming down off amphetamines if nothing else is available...

Melatonin is probably one of the least recreational substances out there. Its really nice for getting to sleep though but as far as legal pot brownies (I tried one), they don't do anything that would be fun. Perhaps to getting some shuteye, but not to get high.

Well these obviously aren't recreational, but they will teach impressionable children that pot-food is okay, and pot leads to heroin and crack. That's a fact jack.

They may as well just be selling smack-y cakes. The children are doomed. DOOOOMEEED!!
