‘I didn’t dare tell a soul. Like an alcoholic hiding his bottles, I started hiding my Nurofen tablets in the backs of drawers, behind books on bookshelves and slipped them between scripts. It was all terribly grubby.

‘They didn’t make me feel high. They just helped me relax.’

We've lost an absolute comedy legend, and all because of fucking Ibuprofen!!!! (they say a heart attack but Ibuprofen can have a great effect on the heart) :X

If only he'd been prescribed pure Codeine and could take Ibuprofen as he wished, or 60/500 Co-Codamol, or Co-Dydramol!
Anything other than Nurofen+ :(

Jeez..... If only he knew about the CWE process!!!! He could still be alive today!!!! :(

If I'm familiar with the man's work, I'm unaware of it, but that is a fucking shit way to go especially because it could have been avoided with proper information :(

Was also unaware of the cardiovascular risks. Should pass that on to my mother, her heart is a bit wonky and she's on the stuff constantly for arthritis. Also got a family history, great granddad had a heart attack at sixty, granddad at forty, my uncle at 35 :/ though seems mainly the males that get the shitty end of the stick, can't be too careful.
 
Since I quit kratom and this horrible heat arrived I've been getting headaches daily, kept on popping ibuprofen the past week. On sunday I had a sip of coke(the drink) and spent the rest of the night with harshest stomach pain ever. Crazy that stuff is OTC

Interesting how this thread shows up an age. Mel Smith was massive (haha,fat bastard) at the beginning of the 80's. Alas Smith & Jones. Thirty years on and he's a four post death in EADD.

(No criticism before someone gets the wrong end of the stick - just an observation of how a star can fade with the vagaries of time)

Yeah I was thinking it would be a bit before my time, world not being graced with my presence til '87, but I'm intrigued now so off I go to youtube or whatever. I love my 70s sitcoms etc but not seen a lot from the 80s

Yeah, the fella was a big star in me yoofdom. Not the Nine O'Clock News and Alas Smith & Jones were faves of mine. He mostly went into behind the camera stuff after that. Directed a few films - The Tall Guy was a particular favourite. Possibly the greatest sex scene ever in that one =D

Although clearly his finest work was Morons From Outer Space (which I actually saw at the cinema :o)

Such a shame anyone actually died for the sake of a bastard CWE. Or even a proper painkiller script. Gout is famously agonisingly painful so surely he could've gotten a proper script. Or stopped eating foie gras between banquets :p

Bet there's not a mention anywhere that this death was 100% preventable either :\
 
Not the Nine O Clock News, late 70's/early80's? Loved that. Obviously fancied Pamela Stephenson. Used to borrow the audio recordings of the TV show on vinyl or cassette from the local library....

That's sad, why the fuck was he not given a script for decent pain relief? It is terrible that people die because the powers that be don't want people taking codeine

RIP Mel. Take solace in the fact that when Hale & Pace die, hardly anyone will remember them either... and those who do won't give a fuck.

Don't be so sure - They were in one of The Armando Iannucci Shows (which isn't that long ago) and an episode of Extras.
But you're right, they won't be remembered for the absolute legends that they are when they were on the screen a lot (my parents had VHSs of all the 80's comedy captains so I grew up watching them :) ).
Though they are looking a little frail / past-it these days :\

I must admit I did go through a brief phase of really liking 'em. Was some time in me teens. Dunno why. But I did. Phase didn't last long, mind. Isn't that what parents tend to assume anyway? Only a phase. Don't actually remember any of it much other than that recurring sketch with them as bouncers or summat and Billy & Jonny. Speaking of which...

I don't think the nurofens killed him tho shammy - can't see what damage they'd do to someones heart. My guess is he was just overweight, out of shape, eating crap and the blood had such a hard time getting through his arteries that you could hear it squeaking.
