I think we should all know the truth about our pieces' health issues

There are a fuck load of issues with pieces. If you're smoking homemade, it probably can't be good for you. Smoking aluminum = bad, smoking plastic = bad. Actually, smoking most things is bad. But here's what alot of people (including me) want to know.

1. Is using a metal bowl bad for you?

2. Now, you obviously shouldn't let your flame get anywhere near plastic. But is it ok if you use something plastic to suck through, but with a normal glass bowl? I heard you don't need to smoke the plastic to do bad things to you, and if the smoke HITS the plastic, it will excrete neurotoxins. Is this true? (Sorry if this isn't clear, it's a weird subject).

3. Do you know any 100% SAFE homemade pieces?

TO CLEAR THINGS UP YES I HAVE A GLASS PIECE! Just wondering in case I don't have it with me, or if I'm just fucking around.

Thanks, dudes. Good smoking :P

I don't know if smoking off aluminium is necessarily any worse for you than smoking off anything else. I think rumours about it causing Alzheimer's disease are pretty much unsubstantiated. I can't see smoke magically releasing toxic substances from plastics, nor do I think there's anything wrong with smoking off metal in general.

I don't have any of these problems, glass ftw
Anything homemade (besides a few types of clay) can cause health problems, unless the bowl is glass or a wooden bowl from a tobacco pipe ( a tobacco pipe that has never been used for tobacco obviously) stay away from sculpey, and most epoxy based clays (use high fire clay that requires a kiln and its fine for making pieces) smoke from glass pipes and ur fine, no real health issues

Simple question nah?!?!

If it's a homemade piece - research your materials, and make it well.

If it's shop-made, find out where it was made, and it should be regulated by trading standards of some kind.

Custom pieces - well, these are ideal, they're great quality and they mean something to you, but if you can make a good homemade piece you spend a lot of time to construct - well, I don't see how anything can be better, unless we're talking about some real space age shit.

GLAAAAAAAAAAAASS <3

CLay is perfectly fine, as long as you use the right kind of clay - use soapstone or hardwood (research your hardwoods first) pipes too.

Acrylic pipes are a no-no for me (mostly aesthetic, as who the fuck makes an acrylic bowl!??! :\ )

Glass, clay, and most metals (aluminum, copper, brass, steel) and woods (hard woodpipe bowls, corn cob pipes) work fine for pipe bowls and downstems. For pipe bodies I try to avoid metal; it conducts heat far too effectively and can cause you to burn your hands.

For actual pipe bodies that won't contact flame, acrylic or other plastics are acceptable; the real reason people don't use them is because they have a tendency to absorb the tars and oils from the smoke and therefore are really really hard to clean. If they are heated up they have a tendency to first soften and then outgas all sorts of nasty shit.

Smoking out of aluminum cans is bad because they are coated with a fine film of plastic to prevent food spoilage/reactions from the acid in food with aluminum. In addition there are dyes and paints on the outside that shouldn't be burned.

The correlation between aluminum in the brain and Alzheimers is just that, a correlation. It doesn't mean that exposure to aluminum will cause Alzheimers, or indeed even increase your risk thereof. Moreover, aluminum and aluminum oxide are not volatile or adsorbed by the human body under most conditions. I would be more concerned with the usage of alum in pickling and deodorants before I worried about smoking out of an aluminum pipe.

Reasonable homemade pieces can be made as long as you avoid exposing smoke to things that will adsorb it, like plastic, and keeping heat away from any plastics or sealants you do use.

People think the stuff on the matte side of aluminum powder is some anti-sticking chemical, holy shit guys seriously, it's aluminum oxide.

You couldn't be more wrong. Many plastics convert into cyanide, ever smell burning/melted plastic? You're smelling cyanide.

Is it safe to use a metal bowl and a plastic bottle as the downstem to make a bong/bubbler?

idk about smoke causing plastic to secrete neurotoxins, but i do believe applying direct flame to things like plastics or aluminum foil could cause them to release harmful gases. personally i don't somke out of homemade pieces very often so its not really a huge concern of mine. unless your smoking out of a homemade piece every day i'd say you don't have much to worry about- the smoke your inhaling is probably doing more damage to your body than the small amount of 'harmful chemicals' the plastic/whatever MIGHt be producing.

really tho.. learn to roll or go buy a glass piece and stop worrying.

Tinfoil doesn't release gas when heated, if anything you'll just burn the grease from your fingerprints off. Aluminum isn't volatile.

Most plastics don't release cyanide when heated, though they do release nasty fumes. Only cyanoacrylates (superglue), ABS and stuff like that will actually produce HCN - plastics that already have cyano groups in their monomers. Other plastics will release other degradation components, like PVC will release hydrochloric acid and Teflon releasing hydrogen fluoride. (to the guy that said smelling burnt plastic is equivalent to smelling cyanide, they're not - and if you can actually sense the smell of cyanide you should be thinking about getting antidotes into you.)

Polyethylene, polypropylene, and polycarbonate should only release organic compounds (which, while not really good for you, are a ton better than HCN or HF).

If you're building a bubbler you should make sure the bowl has at least an inch or so of seperation from any plastic parts, preferably through a metal or wooden tube. Bowls do heat up to temperatures that will melt or soften plastics with continuous usage.

haha well put phoenix.

and damn thizz great replacement man. pretty nice. although it looks like it wouldnt survive a fall of to high :(

I don't plan on storing it very high tbph =D

and thanks man :D
It took me a grand total of 5 minutes to pick it out.
It's got an ice catcher and everything.

what about a gravity bong with a lung, where the actual bowl is non-painted stainless steel socket but the chamber and the bag is a plastic gatoraide bottle and the bag is a plastic white trash bag?? (it doesnt have to be those exactly just felt like describing what i use lol
