I reeeeally wish I could have some fish!! But my kitties would knock the tank over in a split second :(

GEG I love bettas, your little guys are really cute :)

that dark betta of gegs is hard to capture. hes so colorful though

^^ If you kept it covered, and perhaps glued the tank to the shelf?? Then yeah I see no problem in having a betta. Bettas only require relatively small tanks (as pictured above ;)) so it would be really easy for a kitty to knock the tank off a shelf....so that would be my main concern.

I am planning on hybridising keeping fish with my hobby of hydroponics by having a fish tank with talapika (you guys heard of this?) and duckweed. The duckweed will effectively 'clean' the water and feed the fish at the same time, taking energy from the sun. The organic nutrients in the water will then be used in an NFT setup, or perhaps some other hydroponic system and if I can breed the fish, I will pull some out occasionally, gut them and put them under the grill to eat. This way I'll get genuinely organic hydroponic tomatoes and cannabis as well as free meat, with most if not all of the power coming from the sun, which is some feat.

I know keeping the talapika fish in a pond with duckweed will work because I've seen it work with my own eyes. However, how well would this work in a fish tank? It will be situated in my greenhouse, so it will receive plenty of genuine sunlight (enough for the duckweed to photosynthesise). I will use solar powered submersible pumps to 'floom' the water (flooming is superior to airstone bubbling aeration).

How do I get the fish to have sex and reproduce? Do I just put some males in with females?

Forgive me, but I know little about keeping fish. My knowledge of hydroponics is good, however.

^let me get back to you once I'm on a computer with keyboard

Last night I completely cleaned my tanks, bought an awesome new coral, cut frags of two colonies, and tonight I'm borrowing my friends DSLR camera. Stay tuned for awesome pics!

=D

Part I: Pico Reef

OK...so my friend lent me his Nikon d5000 and I was finally able to get decent pics.

The round Cynarina coral in the center there had a little baby polyp growing off it so I cut it off!

I glued it to a ceramic plug and it's growing nicely.
For reference, those squares are 0.5" across.
He's TINY!

Part II, the frag tank

Here is my 33g anemone/frag farm tank.

One end is sandy and has an anemone with a pair of Black Saddleback Clownfish.

The rest of the tank is a farm area where little tiny frags of coral sit on a sheet of eggcrate.

Those are amazing aquariums. That coral is so cool, and yea, like ocean said, I love the little guy poking his head out of the anemone! The anemone itself is cool too! Ok, I admit it, I'm just jealous of the whole thing.

Wow!!!
All of those photos are awesome!!!

Your little fishy in the 2nd photo is the cutest little guy ever!!
Peeking out like that <3 Awww.......
I may have to steal him!

Your last little fish looks like he is smiling and that first coral is amazing.
All of them......I can't get over how pretty!!

For the aquarium and hydroponics idea, the plan is to pump water through a gravel filter at the bottom of the aquarium, where beneficial bacteria will apparently colonise, sort of rudimentary biofilter. Once the water has passed through the gravel filter it will be pumped at a low flow rate onto a piece of glass on a slight incline, so that there is a film of water falling down from the top of the slope to the bottom (the film of water will be 1-3mm deep).

When the water falls off the bottom of the pane of glasss it will fall, in a sort of waterfall, back into the aquarium which will oxygenate the water as it falls through the air and hits the water. The plants (tomatoes I have selected, along with one or two cannabis plants like an autoflowering strain) will grow on the plate of glass with the roots taking up the organic nutrients from the fish faeces supplying nitrogen and other nutrients.

Because it will be done in the greenhouse, the plants will grow from natural light, but I'm thinking of supplementing it with a T5 shop light or a small 250W HPS lamp. The roots will clean the water of nitrogen compounds, making the environment better for the fish to survive.

I need to know two things. What should I feed the fish? Bearing in mind, what goes in must come out, so I want to give them a really nutritious food rich in trace minerals etc. What would you recommend? Is there some type of fish food based on seaweed? It must be relatively cheap, as I don't want to waste any money, and if it's possible, I'd love to be able grow the food that they eat. Is this possible?

Secondly, how do I know what rate of plants to talapika fish to use to the number of plants that I've got growing? And because the plants will be removing the nitrogen from the water, do I need to regulate the pH of the tank water? And as for the talapika fish themselves, are they actually need to get a hold of? Can I buy them easily from pet shops? Or do I need to order them in from some specialist store? Can I buy them online and have them posted (forgive me if that's a stupid question)? Or if a normal pet shop didn't have them, would they normally be able to order them in if I were to request it?

I have no idea what to tell you to be honest. I think you are probably referring to Tilapia. The thing about running a hybrid system like that is that it's hard to maintain exact parameters. Yes, fish supply nitrates and lower pH, but its a lot more difficult to keep them in check. I would search online to find better info

:D

Your pets and the special things they do!

Lost of us have our little pet babies that we love to post photos of........

I was thinking we could all share they're cute little actions here :)

What funny things, special tricks, and adorable little actions do your Petbabies do?

I have a pot-bellied pig that opens the fridge whenever he gets the chance....
Funny and cute the first time....
not so much the dozens of times after
