Pacman Frogs are cool if you're willing to maintain their habitats. They can eat big mice when full-grown, and also eat guppies/little fish that you put in the part of the cage with water. My thing is tarantulas, though.

I think tarantulas are about the coolest animals in the world. I bought them as slings (spiderlings) and sold them as adults to make money as a kid. Now, I'm getting back into the hobby. I have a 4-5 inch Chilean Rosehair Tarantula now. It's a sweet spider. I pick it up/hold it all the time, and it just chills on me while I play videogames and stuff. Hopefully it will turn out to be a female and live 15-20 years. If it's a male, it'll live 5-6 years max. I'm waiting for the next molt (when it sheds its skin) to determine the sex.

My next "T" will be a guaranteed female L. Parahybana aka Salmon Pink if I'm not mistaken. These are also docile and you can hold them, but they get 10+ inches in length full grown. Absolutely giant and so easy to care for. Some of the more exotic species, such as the T. Blondi, or Goliath Bird Eater, can get a foot in length (that's measured diagonally from one front leg to the opposite back leg on the other side), but they need a very specific humidity level to survive through their molts. The thing about Blondi's and Baboons is that they eat like crazy. You can throw 10 crickets in the cage, and it will kill them all, wrap them in webbing, and eat them all at once. So cool. I had a T. Blondi die on me b/c I couldn't get the correct humidity level, and now I'm just interested in the more easy-to-keep species such as Rosehairs, Salmon Pinks, and the beautiful Mexican Redknees.

Another thing about T's is the terrariums. I'm going to put my Salmon Pink in a huge tank with some really cool scenery. It's gonna look badass with a jungle setup and a huge spider in there. Other than that, you just have to provide a small water dish, feed a cricket or two once every other week, and clean up the remains of the crickets/tiny white spots of poop to prevent the spread of bacteria. Oh, and never put a sponge in a T's water bowl. They don't serve any purpose and are breeding grounds for bacteria.

Some people prefer the arboreal (tree-dwelling) species. With these, you can make a badass habitat for them with live plants and everything. I don't like them so much b/c they're skittish and hide more than terrestrial species. Some arboreals, like the Idian Ornamental, have absolutely beautiful designs on them. There are pretty terrestrial species too, like the Cobalt Blue (striking blue color) or Greenbottle Blue (you guessed it, green and blue colored). There's a Vietnamese species that's jet black and super aggressive, I forget the name. King Babboons are really hardy spiders and are sometimes a cool orange color.

I can't wait to feed my salmon pink a baby mouse (maybe I'll feed it a newborn "pinky" first) when it gets full grown! It's gonna be so fucking sick and awesome.

Brazilian Salmon Pink Birdeater (just looked up the official common name)

Maybe there were too many of them to begin with?? Stick with the remaining 3 and see how they go before getting any more :)

And PP, I missed that pic of the betta in a vase, that is SO COOL!!! It has inspired me for sure! I might ask my boss if I can get one today *excitey* =D

Great bump spaceyourbass!!

I've always wanted a tranatula!! But living in Australia makes it exceedingly difficult to obtain a proper, healthy specimen...
And the "bird-eating spiders" in Australia are most unpleasant creatures.....

I'll just live vicariously through you instead :D %)

Lol. Eve if you can find a wild-caught Rosehair (Chilean Rose, G. Rosea) in a pet shop, you ca nurse it to be a well-fed, happy pet. And "rosies" will NEVER bite you like most babboons/birdeaters would. The Brazil Salmon Pink Birdeater, which is the one in the pick above, is a very docile T (which is one of the reasons I want one...they get BIG but are very nice).

Something tells me the Aussies have a better T trade than you think...maybe try looking online? If you can find a Chilean Rose or a Curly Hair, you'll have a very docile, sweet spider that gets pretty damn big too. You're problem might be findig a CB or captive-bred, though. The temperment and lifespan of WC's (wild-caughts) are cosiderably less predictable.

I do know that the "bird-eating" spiders sold in pet shops around Sydney are not tameable, not handleable, and hardly ever come out of their holes in the dirt to be seen :D

So hopefully there are some proper T sources online...
I might just look in to it further then %)
Thanks! :)

You should definitely get a "ball python" snake.
I have one and it is the best pet ever. It is great around people, it moves slow, and it is very low maintenance. You only have to feed it twice a month. (rats).
They usually arent that big either. (like 4-5 feet max)
:]

geckos are pretty cool, and these are the biggest you can find. they're new caledonian giant geckos, rhacodactylus leachianus.. very easy to care for, they run for 300-800 for hatchlings depending on the locality, much more for adults.

The Official Bluelight Cat vs. Dog Thread

**mods, can you please put a poll on this? A simple cat & dog poll should suffice. Thank you in advance!**

I Myself am a cat person. Always have been, and probably always will be. Im in no way against dogs; I actually love dogs, but i love cats more =D

What are the views of Bluelight?

Cats, definitely. There much closer to the evolutionary letter, have much better capacity to forage and fend for themselves, and are independent. Each cat I've ever met has its own personality quirks.

Most purebred dogs, on the other hand, are severely inbred over several generations, have been bred for completely useless novelty characteristics, and are pathetic sycophants who can't think for themselves.

.. Oh, and they stare at me when I eat. I fucking hate that.

Cats are there when you need them. Dogs are just.. there. All the time, with an endless list of needs. If I wanted that much responsibility, I'd go get someone pregnant.

Poll added.

I was thinking of adding other pets, then thought about a 3rd option of either "can't choose" or "don't care". I finally decided to go with Thizzers actual question - Cat v's Dog, with no other options.

You have to choose just one!

I go for Dog, because I adore mine so much & I'm allergic to cats :(

Neither, for asthetic reasons. I like to wear black, and don't want hair on my clothes.

However, one of those hairless egyptian cats would be groovy....

I wouldnt be against putting on a "cant decide" option

dogs.. always had dogs, love rottweilers..

round up all the cats and throw em in a pillow case and throw em in a river.. lol j/k cats are ok..

Dogs all the way. Cats sometimes make you work for their love, which I really don't want to have to do. I get that from dating.

Dogs are much more fun to play with, they make great feet warmers, and I personally don't care for cats because my roomates cat always tries to bite me if I pet her below head.

They also poop in litter boxes (which require me to clean, gross), and dogs just poop outside, like animals should! Plus my neighbor is an asshole and I enjoy letting my doggie drop a deuce in his yard.

I still like most cats, but you do get some mean ones, and I've never met any mean dogs (not counting stray's or abused ones of course).

lol, I think you have your dogs and cats muddled up.

Whats an evolutionary letter? If its "A" or "B" or even "C" then i cant argue but from D onwards well obviously Dog is closer.

I suspect both are equally as good at foraging as is indicated by the fact they got this far in history.

Dogs also have there own personality.

Purebred Cats, just like purebred Dogs have been inbred for years and years. Funny that.

Most dogs have been bred for working at a very specific purpose such as herding sheep or cows or companions or fetching game etc.

I cannot think of a single cat that has been bred for anything other than its looks...............They are the ultimate novelty item.

A cat vs a dog in the thinking stakes is a no brainer........... Pointless even bothering to argue that.

Cats are there when you need them? For what? To fetch your slippers? To get the sheep in? To protect you from that person thats about to clonk you over the head?

There should be a law allowing cats to be culled. They are the single most destructive animal on the planet.

And they stink worse than any other pet.
