The Big Question - Cat v's Dog

I received allergy shots for cat from age 8 to 13. Did not notice any change in allergy. I currently recieve shots again (in my 4th year). I got the shots initially once per week- now I am down to once per month. My insurance thru work covers them, but when I had my "school insurance" they did not. Doc says I have one more year to go. I am currently oon Flonase, QVar, Zyrtec and albuterol. I own one cat, so my serum is for cat, trees, pollen and grass. I do not feel allergic anymore. But this could be from all the meds I am on, and not from the shots.

Sorry it didn't work for you guys!

I'm OK around em when I take allegra 180's but my insurance doesn't pay for them since Claritin is OTC. Claritin has never worked for me as well as Allegra. I think I can get them from Canada, but it's not as cheap as a copay would be. If I'm around the animals at home, I don't think constantly taking Allegra would be the best option.

Anyone had any positive experiences?

:)

Allegra worked the best for me too. My allergist had to prove (fill out paperwork) that we tried other pills to no avail in order to get a pre-authorization for the med to be covered under my insurance. It became expensive. I have a high deductible insurance plan through work, so I stopped. I take the occassional loratidine (Claritin) or Flonase for my nasal symptoms.

Allergy shots do not work for hives which was my main concern last year so I didn't bother. Although, my doc thought my allergy induced asthma might get better. Asthma what asthma? My symptom was coughing. I stopped taking Advair too. My breathing levels have been normal a year off the medication. The less meds I take, the better I feel.

My throat itches and my nose runs after I smoke weed. I am trying to beat that allergy too.

I have a dog and a cat. My allergies have gotten better the longer I am around them. Yes, they sleep with us. My allergies do not affect my daily life. I am so used to sniffing , blowing my nose, then getting dry and crusty that my left nostril now looks like a comma. Whatever.

Allergy shots are covered by most insurances however you need to go every week for about a year then every 2 weeks for a year....it seems like such a rip off. That is a lot of co-pays and time spent at the doc's. You have to hang out 30 minutes after the shot to ensure your are not going to have a reaction. There is NO GUARANTEE that they will work.

Good luck!

I got allergy shots. Because I was allergic to just about everything enviornmental I had 3 shots, once a week, for a year. I'm a lot better now. Before I couldn't been in a house that had cats without my eyes itching like crazy, I had them react to whatever was in my ex's basement and swell shut. Now, I actually own a cat. :) It was VERY painful at times. My mom worked at the medical center, so she brought them home and gave them to me and later trained my ex bf to give them to me so I wouldn't have to bother with the damn nurse and crap. That made it easier. Because my mom worked there they were free...I don't know how long until it got better...not something you notice if you aren't around them all the time. But I believe that if you are going to do it you need at least 6 months. They told me when I started it would be a year, and even with severe allergies and a wide number it was the only thing that really worked well.

I got the test, but never got the shots. They wanted me to get stuck with a needle 3 times a week for a few weeks and I hate needles. I am apparently allergic to everything according to the tests.

My ex hubby had the tests and he was great. He lost his allergic reactions to cats which was good since I had cats and so did his mom. LOL If I had some spare money hanging around, I would have them done.

I got the tests done as well, back when I was about 9-10. I had terrible allergies as a child so we were considering me getting the shots. We were planning to do them over the summer holidays because (if I remember correctly) it would take 6 weeks to complete them all, and at first you get symptoms of allergies so it's rather unpleasant.
Not sure if it's the same these days, as that was 15 years ago.

I remember that when my parents' dog had allergy shots (yes, you read that correctly), he had a 10cc bottle that they brought home and put in the fridge. If I could go to the doc, get tested and get it made up, I'd just ask to bring it home. I have no qualms about IM/SC injecting myself. It's a huge ripoff to have to pay a copay just to get stuck. My GF is on depo-provera and she actually has to get the prescription at CVS, and bring it in to her doctor just to get it injected! It's a preloaded syringe A $30 copay just to get the injection is ridiculous, and luckily she trusts me to give her the injections. I follow procedue to the letter, latex gloves, alcohol wipes, etc. So far we've saved $150 on copays. Easy peasy.

Anyway, I digress...

If anyone had the injections, successful or not, were you permitted to take the vials home?

schpanks

:D

My uncle had an allergy to cats. One shot cured it all. We felt a bit bad for poor old mittens though...

^I'm the same eK. My eyes water, go red and puffy, my skin itches, I have trouble breathing, my nose becomes full and conjested and I sneeze uncontrollably whenever I'm around a cat or dog, or even where one has been! Same for birds in cages, or any other hairy or feathered animal. If one licks me I break out in itchy red hives.

As well as pet triggered hayfever and asthma, I'm also triggered by dust and pollen - so I'm just a bundle of fun to care for in general. :p

I've thought about allergy shots but the cost seems very prohibitive and I don't believe my current insurance covers it. :\
you just described me, but it sounds like you have it worse. :!

i take benadryl+ every day to deal with it.

i didn't realise you had to get all those multiple injections, i assumed you got one and that lasted 6 months or so. fuck that.

^ugh, you must have a huge tolerance to benadryl...I have a significant tolerance but still can't imagine taking it during the day and actually doing anything productive.

I got the shots...for about 3 months. I had to go every week, and the clinic at school where I went was so booked that I couldn't even schedule one everyweek, so I ended up going backwards in terms of dosage size. So I stopped, and I'm not sure if I'll every start again. They take up to to 5 years to see results, and they didn't do anything for my dad.

huh? why do you say that?

i always put my non-productiveness down to procrastination and laziness, so please explain. ;)

^Even a small dose of benadryl will make me lethargic and it very difficult to think clearly and perform work. If I use over 25mg, even multiple cups of coffee won't clear my head. I use benadryl often too, so I'm used to its effects. It doesn't make you tired at all?

They sell allergy needles OTC here to I am guessing at least where I live they would let the average person take them home, although I get privileges since my mom works at the medical center. Like not having to make or wait for appts.

That's very interesting PT, do you happen to have any more information on these OTC allergy needles??

What would you like to know? I used to go in, get them from the case and buy them. They are the smallest size needle they make and holds about 1mL. They worked good for shooting in your hands if you were using them for something other than allergies. But the allergy shots still hurt a lot, basically because you were swelling UNDER your skin. It hurt! And sometimes you have to be careful that you don't react too bad and go up in dose gradually.

Wait, are you just talking about the empty syringes i.e. 0.5ml or 1ml insulin syringes?? I thought you were talking about the actual medication! Sorry...I misunderstood.

Please share your experiences

-How long did it take to see results?
-Are your allergies completely gone now?
-Did insurance cover it?
-How long was your course of treatment

Thanks

:)
