She reminisced of boyfriends and family
Lessons learned and forgotten
You smiled a lot and said “yeah” in all the right places

That talk
That bar room ramble
Uncomfortable stillness that need be filled
Shyness you desperately tried to hide

Downed your drink so you could order another
And bitch about how long it took
She smoked too much again so you could light her cigarettes
And ask about the matches

Without the usual self indulgent, swallow rambling
Or saying goodnight
You whistled a forgettable tune form the juke
On the short walk home
