Meditation Better Than Drugs At Giving Pain Relief

i think some ppl misunderstood me too. i totally believe meditation can help pain. but the title was that meditation is BETTER than medication at killing pain.

i guess my reply was more of a response to the title, even tho i did read the article.

dont get me wrong. I believe that the mind and body are totally linked and things like meditation can do amazing things. no doubt. But, I also hate when studies like this come out saying "ADD can be eliminated by a better diet! Chronic pain is treated better with meditation than with opiates!" and shit like that. It gives uneducated people the wrong idea.

People like me who have tried so many things to control my ADD HAVE tried the diet, the exercize, the this the that, and medication was the one thing that truly helped. People like me have tried chiropractic, exercise, stretches, meditation, etc and in the end without the pain meds its hopeless.

I aint sayin that these other things dont help but just that sometimes the over-generalizing attitude of the articles makes it seem like "miracle cure! you can just meditate your pain away and throw out your painkillers!"

I know that the article aint saying that but the title sure seems to be. its misleading in that way I still think that.

For somebody on painkillesrs and somebody on painkillers who ALSO meditates, i totally believe the second person got better pain control aint no question.

But do you see wat im sayin??

And its important to remember that so many of the studies about 'pain', they conduct them by taking regular people with no chronic pain or injuries, and then they prick their toe with a needle, or they apply heat to their palms, shit like that. it measures the brains response to pain signals yea but I fee like thats kinda a different situation than the way a person with a spinal tumor or somethin like that would be in, its a different type of pain. I guess all pain is reduced to nerve signals sendin out information and all that when u really get down to it, but u get wat Im sayin?

Im sorry if my post came off the wrong way like im dismissin that meditation aint worthwhile. I know it is and that it can help so many things, to deny that would be foolish. But im just sayin that alot of these articles and the way theyre worded gives people who dont know no better, a false idea about pain control. I would say more but I gotta go now, but I hope that clears up my post and gives yall a better idea of the point i was tryna get across:)

^I can totally understand you, Khadijah.
No need to apologize; you may be right about the title.
You also may be right about the difference between chronic and acute pain.
And I appreciate your situation, and the fact that you have tried these things yourself, and don't just have opinions, but actual experience backing what you say.

Their results also must have a specific correlation with the TYPE of pain caused..because everybody knows some medications are more effective than others for different types of pain. Acute vs chronic, muscular vs nerve pain vs migraines vs burns etc. The same would go for meditation vs pain medicine, maybe for being burned with a hot probe meditating is better, but for my back pain, my meds definitely help me more than meditating does, although I still meditate daily.
