"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
Like Sarah Palin recounting the tale of Paul Revere's ride to warn the British (of their own impending arrival), we Americans often have a fuzzy grasp of our history. This extends to the medical cannabis movement, which was birthed in San Francisco in the 1980s out of the AIDS epidemic. Gay men dying of AIDS during the darkest years of the Ronald Reagan era of ignorance found solace -- and in some cases healing -- from the cannabis plant.

In other words, without the LGBT movement -- and specifically, the AIDS epidemic -- there would be no medical cannabis movement.

This is easy to forget at some marijuana-themed events and expos around the Bay Area, which now feature scantily clad women pushing delivery services and young urban tattooed gentleman pushing pipes. That's not exactly gaycentric -- and in fact, it's downright "homophobic," according to some.

So the gays want a special mention for getting weed legalized. (lol)

Even though the reason was spreading a deadly illness through unsafe sex with untold numbers of people? srsly?

I'm not understanding what they expect. Half naked women are used to sell just about everything (hooray capitalism!), and I'm not getting how a "young urban tattooed gentleman" is making this guy uncomfortable, unless it is a veiled reference to race.

I get the impression this guy just isn't comfortable shopping anywhere that doesn't fly a big rainbow flag out front. I think he needs to stop seeing everything through the filter of his sexuality. Sure, there are gay clubs and bars, and that's all good. I guess I can understand gay books and clothing stores. Come on, though, why do you need a GAY pharmacy? What's the fucking point? I'm sure if there is demand, then the market will supply, but I think that gay people should elect to take the "high" road here (pun sooo intended), and show us breeders how to make consumer choices based on something other than sex.

As for AIDS being the reason for medical cannabis, cannabis has been used medicinally for hundreds of years before then. Shit, Marinol was invented in the 70's. Cannabis has been used for everything from arthritis to cancer before and since the AIDS epidemic struck. Sure, it got a big push from the AIDS epidemic, but to act like the gay community is singlehandedly responsible for medical cannabis is farcical. We would have it by now, regardless.

I feel that they are looking for some recognition in this long struggle to legalize this medicine. I do not think they are really looking for all the stereotypical gay things (which, from my experience most gay men and woman do not appreciate at all) to be incorporated or for the identity of the movement to change. Maybe their anger is really rooted in how quickly this movement will get uprooted by big business and they are seeing the tides turn quickly in that direction as they become less and less recognized as a staple element to the history of the recent prohibition in the US

I don't think it is even appropriate to say "they". As far as I can tell, its just this one guy bitching about it. Seems to me like the author of the article had writer's block and some gay homie of his was spewing some bullshit and dude was like "that sounds news worthy!" 8)

How far would medical marijuana get if plants were gay?

This seems strange to me, because we are past an era in which AIDS is a "strictly homosexual disease". The gay community has tried to slough off this past stigma and this guy wants to say that gay people with AIDS are the reason this has gotten where it is today. Well, medical cannabis isn't just good for AIDS and not just for gay people with AIDS. It also happens to work wonders for cancer patients who have had healthy sex lives.
