Med Changes

Almost nine years 40 mg Oxycontin 3 times day,30 mg Oxycodone 3 times a day...for last 8 months the Oxy has been the OP. Dr changed meds due to both of them being very hard to get in my area, one month yes ,next month wait, also, the OP Oxy was not contolling pain. Now on 30 Mg MS Contin 3 x daiy and 30 mg MS Contin IR 3 X daily. These meds seem to surely kill the pain but nowhere near as long and the IRs lasts only half an hour at the most. Dr appointment soon aat which we will discuss change....though am certain a change needs to be made, and only Opana has come up as a possible. Am a chronic pain patient for 11 years and surgery is not an option. Any ideas or advice will be appreciated. Was under great contol of pain till purdue had to play their little OC to OP game...and now things are really a mess for so many people. I am fortunate to have had a couple of Drs who have beengreat and worked with me over the years...but I know that Drs are not always so eager to change meds that have worked so good for so long....as my present one seems to be.

I'm a little confused when it comes to your doses. You've been on oxycodone but was it 120mg ER and 90mg IR or what? If so switching from 210mg/day of oxycodone to 180mg/day of morphine (90 ER + 90 IR)doesn't really make sense.

As the instant release oxycodone was working for you with breakthrough pain I would try and stick with that. Roxicodone or something. As for your extended release meds, a higher morphine dose might work. The problem with Opana ER is that it is the same system as the OP oxy. Fent patches would be another option but it might be wise to save them for if your tolerance gets even worse.

If your doctor switched you to the dose that the mod stated above, then he/she has no idea what they are doing. Oxy is roughly twice as potent as Morphine. Is there something that we are missing? I switched from roxicodone IR to Opana ER and found the Opana to be more effective at controlling pain and it's analgesic effects last hours longer than the effects of roxicodone.

Okay....to clarify for all who posted....my original meds were 120 MG Oxycontin OP a day and 90 MG Oxycodone IR a day. He switched me to 90 mg MS Contin ER a day and 90 MG MS Contin IR a day. As I stated they do kill the pain, though nowhere near the same level and the IR to me is worthless, as it seems to either have no effect or lasts only minutes...maybe old meds???? Not sure.
Though after almost 9 years on these pretty potent meds I know the type of morphine he used is not going to work. I previously haved tried the Fenntanyl patch which I had issues with and also methadone which worked great but after awhile did not and Dr did not want to keep changing dose....different Dr then who tried me on the other meds and he and I eventually hit it right with the Oxycontin and Oxycodone....but now have issues getting them and also an issue with the OP not working as well as the OC. Hope I was able to clarify....thanks for all your comments.....

I'm a chronic pain patient and opana is the best med on the market. Hands down. With Roxi for bt pain.

Violenza...how long have you been using the Opana....and what dose? Ive heard good and bad about this med at about 50-50....and was thinking Id like to try it. Is it as noddy of a drug as the MS Contin.....or are you more alert of your surroundings?

Ms contain is trash. I've been on opana for a year. I take 3 30 mg a day. I am able to function and be clear headed though I am a recreational user as well. It's noddy if you snort it but if you take it as directed there is zero grogginess. I think you should give it a shot. Good luck!

120 MG Oxycontin OP a day and 90 MG Oxycodone IR a day. He switched me to 90 mg MS Contin ER a day and 90 MG MS Contin IR a day.
This is a straight up mistake by your doctor. Note that Oxycontin contains oxycodone and MS Contin contains morphine.

Injected intervenously morphine is twice as strong as oxycodone. However when taken orally, 1/4 of the morphine is destroyed by your stomach and liver, and all the oxycodone gets into your system. Along these lines it can be said that when taken PO (per os - latin for by mouth) oxycodone is twice as strong as morphine.

Therefore you went from a daily dose of 210mg of oxycodone = ~400mg of morphine down to 180mg of morphine per day. It is no wonder your pain is not handled as well as your narcotic medication was effectively cut in half.

Your doses are high enough the oxymorphone (Opana) could be prescribed - especially for ER - and oxycodone IR for break through pain if your doc is hesitant about abuse of Opana IR.
