Mechanisms for Time Released Ritalin

My doctor gave me a prescription for 10mg time released ritalin per day. I don't think its "concerta"...just a generic variety (has a white coating with CIBA on one side and 16 on the other).
The drug isn't doing dick all. I was wondering if anyone knew the mechanism that makes this drug "time released". Are there "micropills" contained within each pill that are absorbed slowly in the stomach, or is there some kind of ester attached to the methylphenidate molecule that makes it time released?
I'd like to find some way to make it work better, but I'm not too big on the idea of snorting it (especially with that white coating)

You are probably taking ritalin SR. Crush them up, take a look. There shouldn't be any capsules. Ask him to up the dose. Tell him you don't really feel much of a difference.

Well if you can't snort a pill then you probably can't inject it (safely) or smoke it either. But you can snort it. I think its time release ritalin. Just crush it up...

Though I am not 100% correct, it sounds like Ritalin SR, in which case you only need to crush the pill to break the time release mechanism - if you don't want to snort it, take the crushed tab and put it in a gel-cap ..

Here's the dillio: Sr Ritalin is the old kind of sustained release (I used to be on it). It's primative techology. Just Ritalin with a coating that's harder to digest. So you'll take it, and like 2 or 3 hours later it'll hit. Unfortunately, at a dosage of less than 20 mg, you might not feel a thing. I agree with Diffidence and PhreeX: if you're trying to use it recreationally, go ahead and crush it up and put it into a capsule...two or three are ok in one capsule. DEFFINATELY tell your dr to get into the 21st century and perscribe concerta. 10 mg of sr Rit won't do a damn thing for ya, as far as concentration is concerned. I'm on concerta as we speak, it goes all day long.

So as long as pills are crushed up and snorted, time released ADD medications like Concerta and Ritalin SR have as much recreational value as the non-time released variaties?

Ritalin SR yes, concerta no. Concerta uses tiny beads for time release which can't really be crushed well. Can someone back this up, I've never actually had a scrip for them.

dude, concerta does not use tiny balls. it gets slowely released through a very small hole, and does not crush well at all and is more like a waxy/rubbery shit inside that turns to jizz when a pill w/o coating is put in water overnight.

If you are interested in recreational value, stay away from Concerta. Ritalin SR is much better because it crushes easily. It is possible to crush a concerta but you have to have arms of steel (like me). Seriously, I tried to crush one a few months ago and I smacked it with everything in my room. A lighter won't do it, a telephone won't do it (depends on how much you care about your telephone), and nothing else I had laying around. When I finally broke it open, the MPH was in the center in another layer of plastic and is a paste which cannot be made into a powder.
Taking a slow release MPH preparation orally won't give you a buzz because the levels of it in your bloodstream rise pretty slowly.
The only thing I know of that has annoying beads in it is Dexedrine spansules but they can still be crushed if desired.
