Washington, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar and nine other senators – including Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) – introduced bipartisan legislation that would ban the sale of harmful synthetic drugs that are being sold and marketed as “bath salts.”

The bill would add two chemical substances, methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and mephedrone, to Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act and prevent them from being sold to consumers. The chemicals can have a similar effect on the body as cocaine and methamphetamines and have been used as ingredients in certain bath salts that have been sold online and in convenience stores.

“The synthetic drugs in these bath salts pose a serious risk, especially since they can be easily purchased online and at stores around the country,” Klobuchar said. “When misused, these chemicals can have dangerous effects and it’s important we take action to remove these substances from products that are accessible to consumers.”

The dangerous ingredients in the salts, MDPV and mephedrone, can be snorted, smoked, and injected to receive a dangerous high.

According to reports, calls to poison centers across the nation have skyrocketed in recent weeks as the drug has grown in popularity. Many of the products, sold under names such as Cloud Nine, Ivory Wave and Blue Silk, contain MDPV, which is not approved for medical use in the United States.

Selling shit in a head shop or gas station is the legal death of a drug...

Yeah, exactly.

Sadly, they are probably under the impression that making it illegal will make it completely disappear off the face of the earth. Mephedrone and MDPV will remain on the markets, they just now be the black markets.

@SDforever420 - Too true. We all know (or can guess) how variable the quality of home-cooked tweeker product is.

I think Meph simply wouldn't have gained so much popularity had Khat not been banned to begin with.

Interesting quote from a recent talk by Prof. Nutt:
Mephedrone was banned before we had any proven deaths from it. Most of those reported turned out to be caused by something else. But during the year when it was a popular drug, deaths from cocaine fell by half, saving around 40 lives.

From all the nasty reports I figured meph was probably more dangerous than cocaine (combined with MDPV in "bath salts" it may be for all I know). Perhaps it is more addictive on average, and it does seem to cause even more vasoconstriction than cocaine, and maybe it causes greater bodily harm than cocaine in other ways short of death, but in terms of blunt mortality this finding that cocaine use was cut in half during the UK mephedrone boom and that substituting with mephedrone perhaps aided in saving far more lives than it ended makes mephedrone look like a, ahem, harm reduction drug! I'm not really defending meph, just saying that if this is true for the reasons the Prof. says it would be remiss to ignore it. Extrapolating to the U.S., as far as such a thing can be done, keeping mephedrone legal would have seemingly saved many more lives due to its use as a cocaine substitute in the long run. Somehow I doubt these senators have considered this.

and i had a feeling this was gonna happen and thought of ordering some mephedrone before the 1st

guess i'll never get to try this one. back to the felony substances then 8)

EDIT: so is this banned yet? I see the place i usually go with still has mephedrone listed as available on their site

At least methylone made it to the next round. It's sad to see drone go though.

That's some good news. In the UK we weren't so lucky. Methylone got banned too. I'm not sure what the justification from the ACMD was other than, "duh...well, it's a cathinone, in'it!. And methedrone is baaad. And methedrone is a cathinone. And so cathinones are baaaad."

It's not banned yet, as the law hasn't passed yet. Buy yourself a kilo, hide it for the next half year, then enjoy the rest of your life%)

sucks, but both of those guys are still dark and evil. meph can drag you to hell and back

Agreed. It runs in the cathinone family I think. I've never experienced a substance so wickedly compulsive/addictive and dark as MDPV. Mephedrone felt more like a novelty, though I could still feel its evil lure. Nothing has ever grasped me into addiction as instant and severe as MDPV though, I can't describe it. Its like a pure straight dopamine push that you just need but don't want. Scary stuff. Especially 'cause of the current prices, legal statue, and availability. It costs less then coffee but is stronger than cocaine.

Mephedrone always felt more to me like something I would do for the experience, for a night out with friends or something. Its social, euphoric, and glowy. MDPV is just pure hedonistic button pushing. I haven't really heard of a single person whos been able to consistently control their use of it. Most people would have better luck even with something like Meth.

I have no idea. I really know someone atm who was caught clearly high and had a gram no more maybe less and the cops arrested them for METH!!! this was in the US....I think its very sad and dumb. Was in jail for 2 days, then they sent whatever to somewhere for testing. I ask this person everytime if things are going well, and they keep saying court dates keep getting pushed off. I found all of this jaw dropping in a stupid sense.

Those 2 chemicals are no good anyway. Just abuse potential out of the ass and bad effects for the abuser.:|:|:|

lol i agree. the high is like a waking nightmare but something about it is extremely addictive. it makes crack seem like a walk in the park

i ended up flushing the last half of my stash cause i thought the Feds were going to raid my house.. nothing has ever made me so delusional

And yet the funny thing is I've read more on BL about people having physical problems with mephedrone. Physical issues with MDPV seem rare (but mental issues common, I guess). Meph I kept reading about how it has a dodgy metabolite similar to ephedrine or something that can seriously fuck up your heart/circulation.

MDPV is comparable to methyphenidate for me, no crazy addiction or side effects or anything.

Biochemically speaking, that's what it should be. Of course people go mad with a few grams of it sitting around (comparable to having thousand$ worth of coke on hand) and start smoking it like crack for days on end, and so it acts crazy-addictive like its user does ;) (me too, fwiw, I'm not excluding myself from having been an idiot with it).

So I agree with those saying how dark it can be, as well as "it's just comparable to methylphenidate, no big deal". It's just a powder, a chemical substance and behaves as it's treated.

Now the interesting point is how it's soon to be "schedule I" in the U.S., which will make both difficult and risky to acquire... perhaps changing one's perspective on any that they may have lying around from a toy to something to use carefully and respectfully (who knows?).

Reuptake inhibitors are generally non-addictive/compulsive for me, incl cocaine/base and cathinones. MDPV is an exception, tho i only became compulsive when smoking it.. Snorting/eating it gave me no desire to redose

Releasers are the least addictive for me. Probably because they don't make me high
