MDMA: Holes in your brain/damage. Myth or the truth?

Hey guys

I know this has probably been discussed many times and not just on this site, but many others, so forgive me if this is of annoyance

I am generally intrigued the long term effects of the drug. I know the mass rush of serotonin has to have some type of effect of the brain, right? Do receptors permanently down-regulate?

I myself have just started getting into rolling (honestly I gave in because of life-stressors, health problems, etc. If you wish to know more just PM me) Last August was my first time really rolling, but it was some weird stuff, maybe BK MDMA or whatnot. Since then, I rolled again in November, 2 days in a row, again twice in December, and now just recently this past weekend for ultra music festival, 3x in a row, and one time earlier in the week for my b-day. The last day of the festival I re-dosed 2 times. All really good stuff from a trust worthy source

I'm aware this week was a little crazy, and it should definitely not be used that frequently. I know that re-dosing is not wise either. I'm currently at a crossroads with the chemical and my beliefs on it. Part of me thinks it really does cause permanent damage to the brain, IE holes taken with brain scans, etc

Then again, part of me is conflicted by the conflicted studies themselves

I figured the best place to go for opinions on this was right here on blue light. I see a lot of experienced rollers posting here, and I assume you guys have more to say about it than controlled studies.

What does everyone feel on this subject? Is dosing every month-2 months safe? Or is even that much TOO much? Is it safe to use at all? I do not want to permanently damage my serotonin system!

Thanks in advance

P.S. For those of you who remember me, if any of you do, my friend made stupid posts on my account many months ago and I'd like to formally apologize for that.

Peace Love and light!

As I understood it the holes in the brain theory came from brain scans that illustrated blood flow within the brain so there were no actual holes but areas of depreciated blood flow. The true source of this theory was quite dubious.

From personal experience I would say that MDMA if abused can definitely damage your brain. At least change it anyway.

The key with MDMA is not to abuse it. If abused its one of the worst drugs out there for messing your head up.

Re time between doses I would lean more towards three months rather than two the longer the break the better :)

This study (or, at least one like it) is where the myth came from. Only someone completely uneducated on how to read a brain scan or even just of basic biology in general could say it causes "holes" in the brain... someone like Oprah, that is.

Overall this is widely regarded as bull shit.. although it did come from somewhere, not just pulled out of someone's ass.

There are no 'holes' in the brain just areas which are less active than other areas.

kim jong il invented the hamburger. this is what he told his people and they believed him.

in the west we hear drugs are and md puts hole in your brain. people believe this.

I think 3 months between doses sounds sufficient. I am just so worried that even using this stuff once will mess your brain chemistry up, not temporarily. All the studies they have out are so seriously conflicting.

I think it even came from multiple sources. If my memory is correct, there was a study done by a scientist using monkeys, where he detected holes in their brains (mind you after mass doses) however, it was later discovered he had actually given them methamphetamine

I was just recently watching true life: I'm on ecstasy (for laughs) and they studied this one woman who had a brain scan and there were "missing parts of her memory". That is all mainstream stuff though so I don't know what I'm leaning towards

I know they brainwash you and tell you what to believe, but I don't think that means be ignorant as well! lol

Interesting fact about kim jong though, is it really fact?

P.S. I'm seriously having trouble remembering how to work the multi-quotes, so forgive me!

Nah, that first study is pretty famous.. he didn't say they were getting holes in the brain though, he said you have a high risk of developing Parkinson's disease. Still an utter load of crock though

Also, the multi-quote button is the one just right of the quote button... just so you know ;)

i wouldnt be surprised to find it has some chance of causing movement disorders later in life. just from feelings/thoughts i had during and after pushing it.

MDMA can definitely fuck you up if you abuse it. Holes in your brain? No. But serious serotonergic damage? You betcha.

It sounds like you are really overdoing it right now. Once every 2-3months is completely reasonable, though.

There are ways to reduce damage when you do take it though. Keep the doses reasonable, avoid redosing, also, studies suggest that COX inhibitors like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, can reduce or eliminate neurotoxicity. Take a couple of naproxen(Aleve) before you roll next time.

Is this a permanent effect as far as you are aware?

Depends how much damage you caused. It will get more active with time if you don't use it again and eat and exercise etc. It will probably never get as active as it once was before because alot of damage has been done. I went to a rave lastnight on shrooms and couldn't believe how dumb all these people look on mdma. To be fair where I'm from there's alot of good mdma, it's not hard to find good stuff. Just thinking about all these kids taking pills upon pills, redosing 5 times and just have no clue about anything. If they find a pill on the ground they'll pop it. Sad thing is these kids brains haven't even developed, I can't imagine what they'll be like in ten years.

My cookies were blocked so everytime I pressed "post reply" it did nothing! lol! Parkinsons? That's interesting info... or misinfo? Very intriguing

May I ask why particularly you feel that way?

It's a myth perpetuated by mtv way back in the day. I think later on they even admitted to it being a myth.

I could believe the actual holes in the brain to be a misinterpretation, but I still worry about what this substance does to your brain chemistry in the long term!

I know I really have been doing overkill. I'm so ashamed of it. I was once so against MDMA for its effects on the brain, and when I got overwhelmed, I gave in and started doing it at the raves. I used to just have tripping as my forte'. Mostly shrooms

Have I seriously fucked my brain up for good? Even if I don't take it for many months? Should I even ever take it again after taking it so often? Does the brain ever recover to its normal state?

Interesting facts about the Aleve

Is it truly probable that I have already done signifigant damage in so little time and so few uses? (compared to the average raver anyway)

I was coming down from it one of these past few nights and thinking about all the symbolisms I saw at Ultra through the video screens. I could see why MDMA could be used against you by certain people with alterior agenda. I felt so dumbed down during the comedown, just going along with the motions, not really thinking too much. It was nice in a way, but at the same time very eerie and creepy

This was some mis-information that was actually published in the USA about 2000! If you get research funded by a government who is wholly opposed to drugs you get seriously flawed results:-

See kids...look at the holes in the brain:-

What does that brain scan truly mean though? The holes in the brain sounds very much like a myth, but damage to the serotonin system, when and at what point does this occur? Any studies show if it is reversible?

http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/threads/598956-The-Brain-Damage-of-MDMA-(-quot-Ecstasy-quot-)

There is a lot of good info here but there still needs to be more research. I don't think we know the full process of how mdma is metabolized yet.

There is also the possibility of coadministration of a mao-b inhibitor or use of an sri after the roll.

I'll have to check that link out.. Many years ago I heard of taking Prozac after rolling to eliminate neurotoxicity, will have to keep researching into that. Good stuff.

You probably haven't done permanent damage. I would advise that you avoid it for at least 6 months though.
