OK, this might confuse n00bs who think there is heroin in pills or something, but this blew my mind the other night.

I was always under the impression that E was always MDMA, MDA, or (rarely)MDE, and that any other effects were due to adulterant chemicals.

However, the other night, some folks and someone like me had pills that they are certain WAS Ecstasy, but after reading this are suspicious that it was this: MDOH

It was definitely rolling, not something else. But there were no rushes, little energy, and a very odd comedown, as per the article. It was nice, but not as nice as MDMA.

Any experienced users ever suspect that your pill was an odd analogue of MDMA?

Who knows man, could have been anything from BZP to ketamine.

No no, it was an MDxx substance. I tested it with the extreme test kit (5 reagents).

Just because they aren't, you can make a mistake, it is possible that a new chemical could react in the correct fashion...

I mean, there is the classic paper in Pharmacotherapy, where the got people with no background in analytical science to test pills using the "DanceSafe Complete Adulterant Screening Kit for Ecstasy", which is a 3 reagent test. The results showed that people would have been just as well off, picking results at random.

The extreme test showed positive for a seconday amine of MD*, ie an MDxx substance. Ketamine and non-MD* amphetamines were not indicated.

I do have a minor in physics and my girlfriend, who helps test, is a chemist. I'm fairly certain we can read the instructions correctly.

I suppose it could have been MDE, which I guess is a secondary amine, but the subjective experience was almost word for word with Shulgin's description for MDOH, including the odd, mild but long comedown.

My only point is that I was shocked to learn that there are other effective analogs and how easy it would be to end up with one by a simple mistake in the synthesis. It sort of takes things beyond the basic MDMA/MDA or unrelated adulterant discussion.

If you are in the states, it may be worth spending the $20 for a GC/MS analysis of it:
http://www.ecstasydata.org/

With that level of testing they should be able to identify all MDxx analogues. The only thing that they can't report is the actual quantity of a substance, only the percentage of it (that is due to DEA regulations).

If you read Shulgin's description of MDOH you would realize it's impossible to have had an experience that was word for word the same as the ones Shulgin described, and think/know it was MDOH, because he found MDOH and MDA to be exactly the same subjectively. Most likely because one is metabolized to the other once ingested, but either way indistinguishable. If you ate anything besides MDMA, chances are it was MDA or MDEA. MDOH has never shown up in any Ecstasy pill that anyone's ever tested.

Sounds like MDEA also...

it's all very subjective :\

even well synthesised MDMA might be 10% random ampthetamines, pills like these probably had a handful of substances - that really messes up tests.

in testing illict drugs, you just can't win

MDOH sounds like a nice chem :)

I agree... every drug experience is subjective. Even taking the same pills on different days gives different experiences... the MDXX class of drugs is not 100% predictable
