This summer is my girlfriend and I’s last hurrah. In 2 weeks I start law school and she goes back to work after having the last 2 months off. We have been rolling twice a month or so, and just generally partying it up as much as we can. So when we heard that 311 was playing 2 nights in Santa Cruz, in a club that holds 800 people, we jumped on the chance to hang out in a cool city and see our favorite band in the coolest venue we will probably ever see them in. Ever since 3/11 day in New Orleans last year (a 5 hour concert event) when some of our friends rolled, we have wanted to do it at a show. I imagined that no feeling in the world could top seeing a 311 show in a tiny venue while with the person I love most in this whole world while my head explodes from the awesomeness of the good old MDMA.
We arrived on the 27th in the afternoon. The show was going to start at 9 so we went in and checked in to the hotel and changed and got ready. I was really excited and wanted to do it that night at the show. My girlfriend wasa little nervous because she has never rolled in public before and didn’t know how the venue was, the people, etc. So she wanted to check it al out and do it the second night instead. I was kinda bummed out, and a little mopey. I shouldn’t have been, but I was. Anyways, we get to the show and see about 20 people that we knew. Hung out in with them and had lots of fun. Had a few beers inside and rocked the fuck out. Loved every second of the show. Afterwards hung out in someone’s hotel room, smoked a bunch of bowls of various kinds of amazing herbage. Did it with the door open and no one cared. Good old Santa Cruz.
Next day we go to the Mystery Spot up in the mountains which was one of the coolest places I have ever been. If you don’t know what it is go to mysteryspot.com and look around a little. It was ridiculous. Anyways, me and the girlfriend had a little argument about stupid shit, and then as we’re sitting there a nice little birdie decided to give me a unique souvenir and drop a little dookie on my shirt. The lady immediately began cracking up and that set a great tone for the rest of the day.
We head back to the hotel to change and grab our stuff and go to the show. We brought 4 pretty good rolls (red trumpets) with us on the trip, but the lady only wanted to take one at the show. I wanted to take both so I could be rolling my balls off. We get there and I go to get in the normal line while she waits in the will cal line. I start talking to some guy next to me who is on crutches. He tells me that last night was his first show and I got so excited about that. I have been to 23 shows and I remember what it was like after my first one. So his friends come back and we all start talking, smoking a bowl right on the street on the downtown promenade area of the city. Awesomeness. So she comes back and gets into line with me and we see the same people from the night before. They get in line with us. At this point my excitement is almost bursting out of ears I’m so pumped up. The line starts to move all of a sudden. Some security guy walks by and tells us that we will all be searched, unlike last night. So we quickly take our pills, I was forced to double drop. Not what I wanted to do, but oh well. We get inside, grab some waters and stake out a spot on the balcony, in the front. I could almost lean over and rub the bass player’s head. What an incredible spot to stand. We have about an hour or so before the show starts at this point. We are just hanging out, talking to the people around us, not paying attention. Then I look over the railing and see the tiny ass venue, all the people smiling and getting ready to rock out. I am just mesmerized. At that point I start to feel the waves flowing through my body, the drug coursing through my veins. The air is electric. I just get the biggest grin on my face. None of our friends around us knew what we were doing, and we didn’t really feel the need to tell them. Then I look back at my one friend, he looks right at me for a second, and gets a huge grin on his face. He mouths to me “are you rolling?” I was so happy at this point I ran over and gave him a huge hug. He was so excited, about the show and for the experience I was about to have he blew me up right there. As I’m talking to him the intro starts, the lights go off. Oh my god. My body was tingling. They play the first three songs, I’m grooving along great. I look at my girlfriend who has the biggest smile on her face I have ever seen. I ask her how she’s doing. She tells me amazing. That made me even happier. And right when she tells me this, the song Hive starts. It is probably the most high energy song they have, and I have only seen it live once, like 3 years ago. The opening chords flew into my face and everything became a blur of amazingness. The crowd was bouncing along in unison singing, everyone smiling. I cannot describe the feeling adequately. I was in pure, unadulterated bliss at this point. I could feel the energy coming off the band, off the crowd, from my heart. I heard a bunch if new songs that I hadn’t heard before and I was in awe. Such beautiful music, in the 311 stylee. Grooved really good for the rest of the show, kept giving the people standing on the chairs behind us the goofiest smiles and thumbs up. Rock and roll.
After the show we were so full of energy, but also so tired, so we went back to the hotel room and relaxed. She took her other roll, while I smoked a couple of blunts while we sat on the couch and laid in bed talking and just loving every minute of it.
The next morning as we are leaving we see an old lady wearing a 311 shirt. We thought that was awesome and when we walked outside we see she’s standing with the bassplayer! Very cool. A great little moment to end our 311 trip.
So we get in the car and take the 1 all the way down. If you don’t know it goes along the ocean all the way down California. It is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen besides Switzerland. Smoke some more blunts and just reveled in the afterglow.
All in all, an amazing trip, capped off by an amazing night and a stunning drive. I loved every minute of it. If you read this whole thing, kudos and thank you. I hope you enjoyed it somewhat!
