MDA and N-OH-MDA Are the Same, But Rats Said No

In this study, MDA trained rats responded to DOM (DOM substituted for MDA). MDA also substituted for DOM in DOM-trained rats. But N-OH-MDA did not substitute for DOM in these rats.

What gives?

The way in which rats metabolise n-hydryoxylated compounds may differ significantly from human. Maybe Shulgin was simply wrong and the hydroxyl group doesn't break off in vivo (but then wouldn't it have trouble crossing the BBB?). Maybe it's converted into n-acetyl-MDA and then passes into the CNS.

edit: Reading up on the metabolism of n-hydroxyphentermine in rats, it seems the when n-HO-Ph enters the intestines it all gets changed to regular Ph.

So, I dunno. It could also be methological differences between previous studies.

The way in which rats metabolise n-hydryoxylated compounds may differ significantly from human.

That would be my guess (rats don't get Parkinsons from MPTP is one example from many of the differing metabolic routes between higher primates & rodents)
