Math rock

Also, I don't think he technically plays "Math Rock", but Mick Barr and all of his projects (Orthrelm, Octis, Ocrilim, The Flying Luttenbachers, and Quix*o*tic) are pretty great

YES!. :D

Not math rock, but...

Quix*o*tic - The Breeze

I'll listen to anything Christina Billotte puts out cuz I think she's awesome. I've not heard one record she's made under various guises that I didn't like. :)

I have just started to get into this style and man have I been missing out. Most of these bands sound like a group I used to love "Polvo"..not sure if they are the same genre.

Anyways my two favorites in this genre so far are Giraffes?Giraffes! and
Ghosts and Vodka. Been listening to these two non-stop for a few days now. Talented players in this genre to say the least. I have been playing a few of these guitar riffs for years now without really knowing what style it was. Thanks to the OP for making this thread=D

^^Hell yeah man....i have to listen on youtube cause I can't find the album to buy. Do you like Maps and Atlases? Perch patchwork is a great album man...I love the wild singing too.

Also really liking this group "Mice Parade" off the album "what it means to be left-handed. The song "Do your eyes See sparks"more like math pop or something but good.

Yeah they're sweet too.
You should check out Foals. They're like Poppy Math Rock. I don't know, the lyrics were never all that, but the way they played is so energetic.

Checking them out laika :) I find it hard not to find my favorite music "prog-rock" in this style. This style is like Sonic Youth meets King Crimson IMO. Very cool when the groups don't even have to sing.

Something about the Giraffes?Giraffes! song the Catholic Girls Go Camping is just blowing my mind right now. The drummer is SICK=D

favorite album in this genre so far is the Ghosts and Vodka though...no need for singing just beautiful songs.

I must say this but, "Mathrock" is an idiotic name for this "Genre."

There were mane different bands, groups playing music in different time signatures WAY befre this crap....

classical arrangements, JAZZ blues..... psychedelic rock....

While I agree with you to an extent, you have to listen to the music before making too many judgements. I'm not saying that you haven't, but I would have stated something similar to what you just did a week ago today :)
It is more than just odd time sigs...most of the bands have a similar sound that justifies the need for this sub-genre having a name.

Yeah. It is a lame name. But it certainly represents a certain style. Not just anyone who uses different time signatures.

I agree, Foals have phenomenal energy. Their basslines especially are incredibly driving and bouncy. I listened to the entirety of Total Life Forever the first time I did ayahuasca and was completely blown away by the beauty of that album.

^^Checking them out now...you are right about the bass. I am mainly a guitar player but I must admit that playing the bass is the funnest of all. Math rock basslines are difficult to learn without a drummer around.

i know these bands arent math roch but stereolab and pale saints harldy ever play in conventional time signatures. 4/4 is boring isnt it?
