Math rock

Polyrythymic drummers will drop ur jaw!

If you guys want to see some drummers perform some simply amazing polyrythyms that really display how people can mathmatically utilize multiple time signatures with seperate limbs all at once, type these names into youtube and let your jaw hit the floor

Ron Jarzombek (showmanship fav), Travis Orbin (all around flavor fav), Tomas Haake (technicality fav), Gil Sharone, Chris Pennie, Dan Foord, Brett Powell, Mike Mangini, Josh Freeze, Danny Carey, John Longstreth (or type "origin drummer").

Of course, I am partial to heavier drummers, but these guys will never cease to impress anyone interested in drums as I have seen some of you are. If any, watch Travis Orbin first. Wow man, amazing.

God do I miss Botch...

I didn't know there was a term for bands who use non-standard time signatures.

heheh..."odd time signatures" functions as a poor proxy for "counter-intuitive, angular, complex rhythms". Also, the lineage need be traceable to 'post-punk' or technical metal....for whatever reason.

Polvo is widely considered to be standard bearer of a genre which came to be known as math rock, although in interviews the band disavowed that categorization. Their sound was defined by complex and dissonant guitar harmonies and driving rhythm, complementing cryptic, often surrealist lyrics. Their sound was so unpredictable and angular that the band's guitarists were often accused of failing to play with correctly tuned guitars

I'm just kinda getting into their stuff actually. Very inspired guitar playing. :)

PERIPHERY(my fav)

Instrumental Periphery > Periphery with vocals imo. Misha Mansoor is a beast on the guitar.

Also, if you like bands like Periphery, Meshuggah, Fellsilent etc. check out Animals as Leaders. (they're instrumental btw) Misha Mansoor actually produced their record.

the drummer for Maps & Atlases might be one of the most talented drummers ever.

Agreed. Saw them the other week and they completely blew me away. Amazing live band.

All amazing drummers. I assume you've heard Sikth if you know Dan Foord. One of the best mathcore bands imo.

Sick video of Travis Orbin here.

If you like Battles check out Gallops.

Also, a few of my favourite math-rock bands atm...

toe
Enemies
This Town Needs Guns
LITE
Three Trapped Tigers (bit more experimental)

I figure most of these arn't strictly math rock but more on the post-rock side of things, but still math rock.

if you remember, i saw you had posted some mary timony in the lounge thread and then told you to check out Ash Bowie.

helium is awesome.

lemme tell i know everything about all of Polvos albums and they are all great but the first three were the absolute amazingness.

first: Cor-Crane Secret

second: Todays Active Lifestyles (this is my personal favorite, track 1 is the greatest Polvo song ever and for me that's really saying something)(thermal treasure)

third: Celebrate the New Dark Age

truly original and ingenious innovators.

Oh bugger, that's right. Sorry, I have the worst memory. I'm one of those people that have to leave post-its all over the place to remember things. :|

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I was pretty much considering getting the first album and then going onto the next one anyway, so sounds like I had the right idea. :)

Oh, and I just found this video of Helium playing live. Granted, it's not my favourite track on theirs, but I love finding rarities. :D

this post has inspired me to start playing drums again. Tomas Haake is fucking insane! 8o

I'm not too big on the genre as a whole, but I like Hella (Zach Hill is a MONSTER). Also, I don't think he technically plays "Math Rock", but Mick Barr and all of his projects (Orthrelm, Octis, Ocrilim, The Flying Luttenbachers, and Quix*o*tic) are pretty great. His recordings are mostly just him and a drummer, playing some of the most complex, alien-sounding music imaginable. It's pretty avant-garde. If you like strangely impressive music, give him a listen. Definitely not someone you can expect to listen to every day, though, it's way too dense.

A little sample of what Mick Barr is all about:

Octis

His guitar work is fucking crazy to begin with, but then add in the fact that he's playing to a drum machine and he seems more like a cyborg than a flesh-and-bones human. All of that is memorized, people...the man is insane.
