Hello, I’m wanting too get some input from anyone who has learnt a martial art.

I lack confidence. . . . . and it’s starting too piss me off and get in the way. So I have made the decision too spend 6 months in China at a Kung Fu School to build some character.

Now these schools are fucking intense! You eat and sleep at the schools, wake up at 5.30 and start training until 7pm with meal breaks though.
It’s Monday to Friday with weekends off so go exploring :)

From what I have learnt Kung Fu sounds awesome with all the hundreds of styles from different regions and temples. Plus weapon training and that it incorporates Buddhism/meditation.

Anyway I’m already saving, should be setting off in about 3-4 months and I’m defiantly going as one of the most amazing people I met knew Kung Fu and he told me it would be the best fucking thing I could do for myself!

What do you guys think?

as an absolute beginner you'll spend most of your time learning to stretch. it's a huge waste of money unless you have a good deal of training and knowledge to begin with.

You're going to get walloped. A friend of mine spent some time in China, including just a week at a Kung Fu school. He's been training in a few martial arts since he was in his early teens, and he was getting his ass handed to him by pre-teens. The culture there is that you start training very early in life, and on top of the constant training you pretty well spar all the time on your own. It's not a place for novices, unless you're 5 years old.

I'm not saying that it's a bad idea necessarily, but I'd perhaps suggest getting a few belts at a local Wing Chun school (or something) before attempting a stay at a Chinese Kung Fu school.

The school I chose is designed for Westerners wanting to learn from scratch and I’m going to go a full six months, so I doubt I’ll be spending six months learning to stretch!8)
http://www.shaolinkft.com/ Heres the schools website if anyones curious. It's actually a very good price at US$325 for meals, training and a room!

Looks pretty interesting. USD 325/month is a pretty decent price, especially considering that it is all-inclusive. I'm still a bit sceptical, but check it out and let us know how it goes.

indeed!

post about how you're in so much pain you can't walk and love every second of it. include pics if you can. good luck!

if you can afford it, it's definitely not a waste of money. learning fresh from the best is far better than learning from mediocre. but if it's a once in a lifetime thing you're saving up for, you'll probably wish further down the road that you had waited until you reached a plateau.

Nowadays the kids are doing jiujitsu and mixed martial arts. And they will kick your kung fu ass.

Its true, MMA is pretty intense. Although someone trained and mastered in Kung Fu is just as formidable an opponent. Kung Fu focuses on things other than ::thai kick::punch::elbow::tackle::

I guess its just what you're looking to get out of it.

aikido is pretty sweet. there are no strikes. its about using an attackers flow of energy against them. neutralizing the attacker without causing harm. its a beautiful and effective art.

its not about witch style will kick more ass

the guy wants "to build some character."

i think its a neat idea
good luck

(and btw "Nowadays the kids..." well they carry guns,..((aka : fuck diminishing martial arts as only a sport)))

^ Yeah i must of misread the post because i thought he said he was getting his ass kicked at school and wanted to learn how to fight. I was way off.

Thanks for the encouragment Ninjadan! better than Impactos spew off negative bullshit.

I was thinking Kung Fu has such a massive history practised my millions through history, compared too, Jiujitsu wich was invented by african slaves not that long ago. Are you sure it's more effective?

The slaves were not aloud too learn how too fight so they made it look like dancing too get around it, pretty interesting!

read this again and tell me how it's negative.

besides, if you only want people to jerk off to your idea then clearly state it in the original post or just write in your blog. don't ask for an opinion if you do not want.

Yes brazilian jiujitsu is more effective than kung fu. So is mixed martial arts, russian sambo, muay thai kickboxing, and probably boxing.

Not so sure about the kung fu lifestyle, there isnt much meditation and eating rice in the above martial arts!
