and all too unseemly
the wicked dance played for amusement
gets raucity from the crowd

and backstage you idly sit
deus ex machina.
godless, faceless, blameless (ha!)
only cowardice compares

yet the marionette,
now ignored, and with strings now cut
continues to dance

too hopeful to be awake
too willing to try fate
too scared to think

too stupid to escape.
