Talk about your opnion, what kind of martial arts you do/have practice and how marijuana enhanced/impeded your practice

I've been a blue belt in BJJ for several months and have been practicing Muay Thai for about a year and a half, I love training when high. Weed, when used responsibly, puts me in a creative "zen" state (a hippy thing to say, I know :p)... though it comes at the expense of a little bit of cardio. As long as I don't get too baked I can say it hardly impedes me at all, in fact it could be considered a performance enhancing drug ime.

Ba-dum, tiss

Not all martial arts are dominated or created by asians though, surprising, I know. Even though I did chuckle at your post.

Couldn't be more off, MJ is very popular amongst the martial arts community. Because of this I thought this thread was more than appropriate. Guess there's just not many martial artists on BL :p

ya lots of people like to exercise a little stoned, i think vaporising is the best method if its intensive exercise personally.

i used to have some really amazing experiences doing bikram yoga when stoned.

id like to learn tai-chi or qi-gong but i don't think there would be any good teachers in my city

^ You should go to a local fight gym and learn MMA, a striking based skill (boxing, muay thai, kickboxing, Taekwondk etc...) and a ground game (BJJ, judo, wrestling, sambo, etc...). What you mention is more or less meditation based techniques as opposed to practical combat based martial arts, not that there's anything wrong with meditation.

IMO every man should have to learn how to fight. It would really humble a lot of people by teaching them they're not unstoppable, and there's always somebody else who can kick your ass... builds character as well. Too many people walk around with pent up anger and aggression always looking to fight, yet no skill on how to do so lol.

NO SHIT?!!

I didn't know you did BJJ man!

I'm a brown belt in BJJ, been doing it over 10 years now, and also train in Muay Thai, boxing, and some wrestling and MMA.

I've actually competed in a bunch of tournaments.

However, weed always made my martial arts game drop badly because I have asthma and would gas out if I was smoking a lot while training, not to mention that I drink a lot of alcohol and eat a lot of food when smoking weed, leading me to gain weight and be heavier while training which isn't good.

For me, the two things never went together well and martial arts was always my biggest motivation not to smoke too much weed, drink too much or do too many drugs.

Been doing muay thai for about 6 years now. Weed is always stimulating to me, except apparently when I'm training. Tried to smoke right before training on two occasions and on both accasions I had to sit down after a short while, I think this is because of my naturally low blood pressure and weed dropping it even further, since I started having black spots in my vision. Weed combines well with almost any activity for me, except for really intense training

Amphetamine kicks cannabis's ass in terms of martial arts training. I swear this was the Samurai's secret weapon for mastering such finesse.

Weed might really help on the artistic aspect of it though, but in terms of sheer physical performance, might as well use ephedrine.

Plasticity, who did you get your blue belt from?

I actually used to take seminars from Royce back in the day.

I'm probably a couple years away from my black but I prefer no-gi training to gi training.

I just wanted to talk to Plasticity about this cause I think it's cool you also do BJJ.

I'm a brown belt in BJJ, been doing it over 10 years now, and also train in Muay Thai, boxing, and some wrestling and MMA and also have a 2nd degree brown belt in Kenpo, Karate. I've basically been into martial arts my whole life, since I was 8 years old.

I've actually competed in over 30 tournaments over the years.

However, weed always made my martial arts game drop badly because I have asthma and would gas out if I was smoking a lot while training, not to mention that I drink a lot of alcohol and eat a lot of food when smoking weed, leading me to gain weight and be heavier while training which isn't good.

Wow that's awesome man, had no idea you were into martial arts :D. I definitely prefer no gi training as well. Unfortunately though that and the fact that I've never had much interest competing means that it's probably gonna be quite some time before I ever reach purple belt status, I will delve into tourneys eventually though. I do martial arts mainly for the discipline it teaches (the self defense and fun too of course), it keeps me humble and leveled. Nothing like the tranquil headspace after a good training session. I'd prefer to keep my instructor and gym private though for obvious reasons. I do some gnarly drugs so no need to have any connections from my gym to this site, even though my instructor smokes a ton of weed lol. Haha he teaches high sometimes, a lot of people in my gym roll high.

The BJJ scene in cali (or martial arts scene in general really) is pretty intertwined in the cannabis and psychedelic scene. For many out here weed and BJJ are like peanut butter and jelly. Like BlueBull points out heavy muay thai sessions while high is a bit more demanding so training MT while high is a bit different, though I personally have never had any real issues. I typjcally won't spar MT while high but I'll take a few puffs or eat a small edible dose if I'm just gonna hit mitts. I'll just say my BJJ instructor is well known for his own system though. I'd like to say who he got his black belt from but I feel that, my location (gyms quite the drive from my city though), and any other info would be a dead giveaway, chances are you've at least heard of him though.

Yeah you don't have to tell me your instructor and I also left my instructor's name out for the same reasons.

There's a video online that has me in it and I'd show it to you if you want to see it but only through PM cause I don't want to post it on the forum but it seems like you aren't taking PMs now.

If you are interested in seeing it PM me and I'll give you the link for the video privately.

Yes, I know that the BJJ scene in Cali and weed are like peanut butter and jelly and to tell you the truth it actually annoys the shit out of me simply because I CAN'T personally mix the two at all.

First off, I get paranoid a lot from weed and the last place I want paranoia from weed is while training.

I LOVE weed when smoking by myself or with good friends but often need to mix it with alcohol to get rid of the anxiety which is also a no no.

Most of all it KILLS my cardio cause of my asthma, and like I said, makes me eat and drink more.

I am sure I know who your instructor is and I also know plenty about the guy who started the weed and BJJ scene combination and he is actually someone who my instructor also knows and he has spoken highly of my instructor's skills.

My instructor uses a lot of his guard moves.

Actually, the one drug I have recently found IS amazing at least for the gym is Kratom.

I have not yet used it while doing BJJ but I am sure that I will.

But it seems like it would be great in almost every way for martial arts: it's a painkiller, it's a stimulant in one sense and can therefore probably improve performance but also a relaxant and helps with my anxiety not to mention that it is also an appetite suppressant which can help with dieting and making weight.

In every way it is like a Super Drug for training and I've been working out a lot at my gym and dieting lately while on Kratom.

As you know obviously it's huge in Thailand which leads me to the STRONG assumption that I bet there are TONS of Muay Thai fighters who probably take Kratom.

Have you ever heard about whether or not Thai fighters take Kratom??

So yeah, moderate doses of caffeine and Kratom are the only drugs I've so far found to be helpful with training.

The only things I am concerned about with mixing Kratom and training are whether or not the pain killing properties might lead me to pushing something too far, like trying to resist an armbar cause I think it's not tight and ending up hurting myself but the other thing I am wondering about is whether or not training really hard on a stimulant like Kratom could be hard on your heart??

Do you think that the combination of a stimulating strain like Green Malay plus several cups of coffee could be bad for one's heart while training really hard??

My grandfather once told me it could be dangerous to train hard on dexedrine cause of heart damage risks but Kratom is different in that it isn't a pure stimulant so I wonder if it is ok or could be dangerous?

Also, do you think Kratom is strong enough as a painkiller that a person might be more likely to hurt themselves training on it?

What is your opinion on that??

Martial arts have always been my main passion in life. They are so good for so many things and become a real way of life for people rather than just a hobby.

My life would be majorly lacking without them.

PM me if you would like to see a video of me competing in tournaments as well as my team.

And if you ever want any advice on BJJ or just to share stories, techniques or info PM me as well or even just ask here in this thread because even though I'm certainly not an expert yet I've been on the mat since the mid 90s and have plenty to share.

Interesting! I never knew that although my knowledge of the martial arts is limited to what I've seen in Bruce Lee & Jackie Chan movies ;)

I know, I just had to come up with something comedic for such a random thread as this. Really OP? Martial arts and marijuana go together like Oreos and orange juice.

I dont see why you would think that.. I started smoking weed as a young teenager. I was always fighting, but I NEVER would have seen myself becoming a Martial Artist , but when I fell in love with martial arts I feel like marijuana and martial arts were always ment to go together. Hell, even Bruce Lee, the GOAT was a stoner.

I can say IME though, sometimes being really high and training I get carried away, not that the weed itself tires me, but I forget to pace myself so I end up going balls to the wall for like 1 round and being tired af' the rest of the fight ?

I used to get high as fuck with my Krav Maga practitioner then practice killing niggas. But seriously I didn't notice a difference with any of my training be it muay thai, krav maga, or kempo.

Inb4 fight me pussy.

Man i would kill to be able to train Muay Thai. Thats some hardcore shit. I train traditional Taekwondo and boxing but i would fuckin love to try thai fighting
