I was just thinking about the good ole' days of early pot prohibition and Anslinger and what not, and I remembered that they always used to spell it marihuana, and I have no idea why (although I've always been curious).

Anyone know why the spelling has changed?

Marihuana is a Spanish slang term and marijuana is an English slang term. They probably used "marihuana" because they wanted it associated with Mexicans. People were already prejudiced against Mexicans so an easy way to get people to be prejudiced against cannabis was to associate it with Mexicans.

i heard a theory on why dope became illegal ( I am not saying its true and Im not taking the piss outta jews with this but i found it funny). I heard that apart of the jewish belief is that all people should be there slaves but after it became "Illegal" to own white slaves the jews started buy Indian slaves (not native american) and they found that allowing them to smoke dope made them more effective workers but when they gave it to black people they became lazy and unruly and because at the time cotton was becoming the main source of clothing it was just easier to make the marijuana plant illegal. My work studies teacher told me this years ago and he is a conspiracy nutter (he thought the u.s government was out to get him) has anyone else heard anything like this?

well.. i think cotton might have been about to be kicked in favor of good old cannabis - they had just invented the decorticator machine to help produce hemp textiles more efficiently when it became illegal..

the spelling marihuana was even used in the early legal documents.. definitely a slam on mexicans..

we should find this documents and change the name once again to, miss mary jane mother of all things great, the greatest thing that ever walked (or in this case grew) on this green earth, the dopest dope we ever smoked... and change its status to legal... easier typed then done i know.

Very insightful. Thanks for sharing. :)

Yeah I knew about the racist goals of prohibition, I guess I'd just never made the connection. I agree with Subjester, we should officially change all the old documents. Everywhere it says marihuana it should be changed to dank or sticky icky or chronic or something. Yeah. Thanks for the responce, that makes sense. Anslinger was an asshole of epic proportions.

you gotta really emphasize the h...

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_Narcotics_Tax_Act and see how much prejudice was the basis for outlawing drugs :|

very keen link...

"Negroes in the South are reported as being addicted to a new form of vice – that of 'cocaine sniffing' or the 'coke habit.'" Some newspapers later claimed cocaine use caused blacks to rape white women and was improving their pistol marksmanship. Chinese immigrants were blamed for importing the opium-smoking habit to the U.S. The 1903 blue-ribbon citizens' panel, the Committee on the Acquirement of the Drug Habit concluded, "If the Chinaman cannot get along without his dope we can get along without him."

"cocaine is often the direct incentive to the crime of rape by the Negroes of the South and other sections of the country," even though there was no evidence to support this claim.[citation needed] Wright also stated that "one of the most unfortunate phases of smoking opium in this country is the large number of women who have become involved and were living as common-law wives or cohabitating with Chinese in the Chinatowns of our various cities"

The drafters played on fears of “drug-crazed, sex-mad negroes” and made references to Negroes under the influence of drugs murdering whites, degenerate Mexicans smoking marijuana, and “Chinamen” seducing white women with drugs.[11][12] Dr. Hamilton Wright, testified at a hearing for the Harrison Act. Wright alleged that drugs made blacks uncontrollable, gave them superhuman powers and caused them to rebel against white authority. Dr. Christopher Koch of the State Pharmacy Board of Pennsylvania testified that "Most of the attacks upon the white women of the South are the direct result of a cocaine-crazed Negro brain".[2]

Before the Act was passed, on February 8, 1914 The New York Times published an article entitled "Negro Cocaine 'Fiends' Are New Southern Menace:Murder and Insanity Increasing Among Lower-Class Blacks" by Edward Huntington Williams which reported that Southern sheriffs had increased the caliber of their weapons from .32 to .38 to bring down Negroes under the effect of cocaine.

History channel has done some great documentaries on Reefer Madness type stuff- pretty amazing what politicians were saying back then.

I'll never forget the one guy who proclaimed hysterically that "Reefer can make a negro look a white man in the eye"

Yeah, your teacher is a nutjob and has no idea what hes talking about; consider the fact that marijuana wasn't made illegal until something like 70 years after slavery ended. (Lets ignore indentured servitude.)
