Anyone going to Mardigrass this year? I have wanted to go for years to have a look.

If anyone has been before can they offer any advice on where to stay and what to do there?

I have been a few times over the years. The place tends to give me the sad creeps most of the time but Mardi Grass is fun. I wouldn't bother stying there, I'd prefer to stay in Byron and just catch a shuttle bus. You can get a weekend pass that includes camping but in the past few years I have heard of the police targetting people in the open. Although it is pretty relaxed I always have that uncomfortable feeling that one year it will erupt in a clash between the riot police and punters. Never does but who knows in these times.

If you go I say treat it like any other time. Don't be blatant and spark up a Rasta size doob in the middle of the street, you will likely be arrested. Having said that there is plenty floating around and no shortage of baking products. Also have a designated driver, there is really only two roads in and out and gone are the days of just having to blow the bag.

Personally I loved the joint rolling competition. Some of those guys (and girls) hyave far too mauch time on there hands and put my soggy attempts to shame. :( The Parade on the Sunday is always an eye opener. All this talk has me thinking I might make the trek down this year. No excuse when it's a long weekend.

Yeah I've been looking into it in recent times too. I think it would be quite the adventure. Might look into it and see you kids there ;)

I remember reading there was over 100 arrests made last year, could be mistaken but i think thats correct. I know thats against well over a 1000 people I think it was (1700) if my memory serves me correctly. But they mostly target people distributing rather then just pinning everyone.

I was going to go but I have better things to do...My friends have a stall up there and yes you can find all kinds of cannabis containing foods but often they are hidden and you have to ask for it...dont be shy either, you can pretty much ask anyone for pot but you just have to be careful of undercovers.

I've been ever year for 5 years, also went to a few before then too :P, cant wait for this years :D

After being arrested for production this year I am more behind the cause then ever hehe

I love the festival, spend most of my time at the camp site talking with other trippers and fire twirling all night. Been to a few of the doofs but camp site partys always seem better :P

Never been arrested, never been searched and im off tap from the moment I arrive to leave and had people ask /me/ if they could buy drugs thinking I was a local :P . So yeah don't be to worried about being hassled by the cops, just dont be a dick and blow smoke in their face and they shouldnt bother you.

Great time, great people, great cause :)

I backpacking in Australia at the moment and I happen to be in te neighbourhood, so will definetely go there :D.
If other people are thinking about going there, please do.

Lol, I found out about MardiGrass the day before me + a bunch of mates went down there... That was last week. CBF driving that far twice in a week, but it woulda been nice.

Sadly someone was hit by a car walking along the road from the Doof and was killed on Saturday night. Now the police and the local council are looking at options of prosecuting the Doof organisers and property owners as the event was not given council approval.

Unfortunately the police historically at Mardi Grass have always been the party poopers, in this case not allowing the Doof to legally proceed. Mardi Grass doofs have always acted as great option to keep on partying after the towns daily events come to a close and secondly, as a means of drawing several thousand people out of the town on the Saturday night to minimise the impact on the local community of Nimbin.

If the event was held at a site where parking and transport issues where not an issue maybe this unfortunate incident could have been avoided.

^This is sad to hear!!On all parts :( Prosecuting the Doof organisers and land owners is just silly in my books! I think some more people need to watch Kymatica and the Calling to see what our real rights are when it comes to this type of thing...Insurance huh !? Blah..

That's horrible! I seriously couldn't see how everyone could leave Nimbin on the Saturday night safely, the place was packed it was lucky there was a doof on so close to clear the area.

It gets worse every year unfortunately because of the police being so strict and dodgy.
They take ya drugs and ya money in ya wallet. It happened to me and people i know a few times. Such a shame as well.
Beware. I wonder if anyone got in trouble with police.

I'm heading with a group of mates to Nimbin at the end of Feb and I'm wondering what it's actually like?

I've 'heard' it's like a crappier version of Amsterdam

- You can smoke joints in cafes
- easily buy weed
- no ones to strict on smoking in public

Anyway, if anyone has been there could you please give me a review of how it was, worth going, where you stayed etc.

Cheers!

its full of junkies, you are 20 years too late to see the real nimbin, now its like st kilda with cows.

- You can smoke joints in cafes- No, in fact the coffee shop owners will hand you into the police if you try
- easily buy weed Yes, you'll be lucky to even put your hand brake on before some feral approaches you
- no ones to strict on smoking in public No, the police will arrest you. Sometimes they even set up a road block (there are only two roads) and search your car

If you want Amsterdam you'll need a plane ticket. Nimbin is a depressing sleepy country town with an interesting history that is now full of some feral, dope fucked individuals who also control a lot of other illicit drug trades. There are some cool shops, the museum is a interesting time filler and for the most part the local business owners are honest hard working people who are grateful for the towns notoriety bringing in tourists. Seeing 14-15 year old kids hanging around parks, smoking and dealing when they should be in school is sad and a shame. The fuck head locals who also cause trouble at party's or the pub are a blight and should have been shunted out into the jungle decades ago.
