AUSTIN (KXAN) - Karen Scott did not know what to think when she got a phone call last week to say her nephew Eric had been admitted into St. David’s Hospital with vascular problems.

Unfortunately, doctors did not know what to think, either.

“They really did not know what he had taken,” said Karen.

After a week-long stay in the hospital, Eric has undergone two angioplasties and his left leg has been amputated.

It appears to have all started with something he took on his own.

“It is a tragedy because it could have been avoided,” said Karen. “It is self-induced.”

Friends who brought Eric to the hospital told doctors he had taken a drug called DOB, a psychedelic drug that medical experts say is rarely seen due to its powerful nature.

DOB causes the veins and blood vessels to constrict so tight that blood cannot flow throughout the entire body.

Experts say it looks like cocaine or LSD and the people who take it often confuse it for one of those drugs.

Karen does not think Eric knew the dangers of DOB.

“They are making it in backstreet alleys and giving it to kids. They have no idea what they are taking," she said.

As rare as the drug is, experts say it is still relatively easy to make.

I cant tell you how many times Ive snorted a fat line of coke and it turned out to be DOB.. :\

Yeah, wtf is up with that? Have reporters absolutely no clue about drugs at all...never mind I guess I have my answer..

LSD sure, but if you're coming across pure powdered DOB you probably know your shit and aren't confusing it for cocaine. I wonder what the dosage was, I've only heard of vasoconstriction that bad on BrD-FLY

As much as I hate (and I say that with every fiber in my being) DOB, what back allies are these people making drugs in, and where can I locate them? :D

I'm still trying to figure out if you guys post these things for any reason other than to make fun of the hopelessly stupid editors that write them

the articles are entertaining but still i wonder how DOB caused this guy's leg to be amputated, that's really fucked up and if it's a possible risk of using DOB the article should probably mention the dose and how/why it happened for harm reduction sake. DOB has been around for a relatively long time and i've never heard of anything like this happening to anyone else. I've had terrible vasoconstriction from LSA and i couldn't imagine having a limb amputated as a result.

Ofcourse not. For example, if it's a Daily Mail article than it is to make fun of the hopelessly stupid commentators that write the comments.

That is not why it is a tragedy.
It is a tragedy because a boy lost his fucking leg.
Whether it resulted from a disease, an accident on the street, or an accident from a drug is not really relevant, I would say.
("He chose to cross the street himself, so it is self-induced: a real tragedy! If only he had been hit while waiting on the curb, it wouldn't have been so awful.")

Friends who brought Eric to the hospital told doctors he had taken a drug called DOB, a psychedelic drug that medical experts say is rarely seen due to its powerful nature.
So THAT is why I can't find any - because it is powerful!
Good to know :|

It's amazing how much power they wield in this world. Drug laws would have disappeared long ago if journalists had been a bit more circumspect. For instance, it's not too hard to say that there are many psychedelics that carry acceptable side effect profiles, and if the market for psychedelics were out in the open then people would know what and how much to take. Since the journalist is citing "experts", why not include the point of view of a recreational drugs expert?

This kid may have problems with his heart in the future...........he had his coronary arteries unblocked. This usually happens to older people with heart problems & he lost his leg on top of it, geez.

I love how they say it looks like cocaine OR LSD... that gave me a good laugh.

If it was simple enough for a child to make in a alley, why would they have not just made there own batch ! No confusion any more.

I mean, my 1st comment was sarcasm. Though I suppose almost anything is simple to make if you have the precursors, reagents, solvents, laboratory, privacy, literature and experience.

So would anyone surmise other DOx compounds could have such an effect on a person?

I'm curious because I have a few friends that have tried DOC and they all found it to be unpleasant in various ways.
