A West Virginia man who told authorities he was hitchhiking across the country and writing a memoir about kindness was injured in a seemingly random drive-by shooting near Montana's booming Bakken oil patch.

Ray Dolin, 39, of West Virginia, was shot in the arm as he approached a pickup Saturday evening, thinking the driver was offering him a ride, said Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier.

The shooting took place about three miles west of the town of Glasgow, along rural U.S. Highway 2, a major route into and out of the oil patch.

A 52-year-old man from Washington state, Lloyd Christopher Danielson III, was arrested about four hours later near Culbertson. Authorities said Danielson was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. They released no motive in the shooting.

"He was sitting down to have a little lunch and this guy drives up. He thought he was going to give him a ride and as he approached the vehicle, the guy pulls out his weapon and shoots him. It's as simple as that," Meier said.

I've hitchhiked a lot because of not having any money to travel the fancy way. I've met a lot of great people on the way but there are also a lot of real sketch bags out there. I don't get how women hitchhike safely.

When I was in Texas this obviously drunk guy picked me up at night and drove past the exit that I wanted to be let off at. Then he started talking about nigger this and faggots that. He then said, "Hey, want to see my gun?", and he opened his glove compartment and took his gun out to show me, but he was kind of waving it around. I was shitting myself, especially because he kept ranting on about all this hateful shit.

Then finally, by the grace of God, his logic kicked in and he realized he missed my exit. He did a u-turn on the freaking highway and dropped me off. I practically kissed the ground.

Good for the young guy for trying to write an inspiring book, for some reason hitchhiking culture seems to attract crazy sketch bags. If you even LOOK like someone bumming rides around people might take random issue with you.

It's sad how ironic that is :(
Btw Foreigner, your story there has just made me decide that I'll never, EVER try to hitchhike. Not that I wanted to.

I wonder if the guy had read American Pictures, which is an older book written by a Danish guy hitch hiking across America in the 60s, 70s and 80s living with the poorest people he could find. It's all about kindness and love in the face of poverty hate and injustice, everyone should read it. I think it's on his website in full, his name is Jacob Holdt.

But the times have changed, hitch hiking used to be fairly safe but a lot of people these days are either irrationally scared of hitch hikers or scary people themselves, so it's usually not the most nice people picking you up. Crazy that people will just shoot each other over nothing like that, what an asshole .
