Man and Dude and Bro (& co.)

Some white guy, wearing a few pounds of gold, with Oregon plates, called me cuz the other day.

I'm female, and I call people (male and female) 'dude' and 'man'. It comes pretty naturally for me. More naturally in fact, than 'babe' or 'sweetie' and all that stuff that girls call each other (although I do say 'babe' and 'my dear' from time to time)

If a chick calls me "man" or "dude" I immediately think she's giving me 'friend' vibes and I don't have a shot of sleeping with her. :(

I have called a guy 'dude' or 'man' consciously before, just to make sure he gets the friend vibes.

Then again, I've also done this...

When a chick calls me man or dude, I think it's because she wants to fuck me and is trying to get me to pursue her more by teasing my in a patronizing way.

And then again, I've also called guys that I was dating 'dude' or 'man' without any intention behind it.

Ahh yes, thank you for bringing that up!

If one is to argue that guys calling other guys "man" "dude" "bro" etc etc is a way of asserting their masculinity, could we also argue that girls calling other girls "sweetie" "babe" "gorgeous" etc etc, the same thing??

Personally, I call my sisters and sister-in-law "love". We all do it, and again, it is a term of endearment. I call my best friend "my sweet" or "sweets" or again, "love" etc. And as most of you have noticed, I use the word "hun" as a term of affection to most females I talk to online. It's just a colloquialism I subconciously use in conversation, no hidden messages behind it or anything :)

I am inclined to agree with genericMind on this one. I think people are reading WAY more into this than is actually there. Many people, possibly most people, use some sort of colloquial word in place of a person's name in casual conversation.

Some people, myself included, find it a bit too "official" sounding to use a person's name every time addressing that person.

Obviously each person should use whatever form of speaking is most comfortable, but I wouldn't read too much into other's people's choices.

It doesn't take much to bother me. Have you seen my post count in "pet peeves?" ;)

Tee Hee :D

Fjones... I can help you release all that anger, just come to my room ;)

Maybe this isn't such a bad idea.

Women are really annoying sometimes with all these stupid head games they play. Do gay men engage in this nonsense?

AAAAAAH, fuck it, I might as well just come out and admit it -- my disdain for this thread and related discussion was all an elaborate ruse to hide my true sexuality! I cannot hide it any more!!!!!!!!

Dude. You said it, bro.

Back in my day, there was no 'g' on the end of 'man'. When and where (and why??) did 'mang' first appear?
