Don't put a heating pad on the patches.
Black box warning on the patches:
Avoid exposing the DURAGESIC® (fentanyl transdermal) application site and surrounding area to direct external heat sources, such as heating pads or electric blankets, heat or tanning lamps, saunas, hot tubs, and heated water beds, while wearing the system. Avoid taking hot baths or sunbathing. There is a potential for temperature-dependent increases in fentanyl released from the system resulting in possible overdose and death. Patients wearing DURAGESIC® (fentanyl transdermal) systems who develop fever or increased core body temperature due to strenuous exertion should be monitored for opioid side effects and the DURAGESIC® (fentanyl transdermal) dose should be adjusted if necessary.
Let me change this thread a bit. I have had a fair amount experience with opiates,. Including one non-mallinckrodt brand patch with the same dose in it.
With the non-mallinckrodt brand, just 1/3 of the patch had me in heaven for 2 days. If I had taken the whole thing it would have killed me. So I put 1/3 of the Mallinckrodt on, and waited 12 hours, nothing at all. I repeated the process untill now I have the whole damn thing on, and its been another 8 hours since last application. I should be dead but intead im just pissed off! It's doesn't expire untill 2014 and was not damaged. So im changing this to a warning thread. STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM MALLINCKRODT BRAND PATCHES!!! THEY HAVE NO PSYCHOACTIVE EFFECTS!!!

Hi Loots!
Please don't give up so soon. Some people can take upwards of 12 hours to begin noticing any pain relief. And as someone stated before, please do not tamper with the patch... just finished reading a thread on here about somebody seriously overdosing on fentanyl, even though they were very experienced with the drug.

It's because of the adhesive on the patch. If you remove it, the Mallies will work.

they take anywhere between 8-12hrs to reach peak plasma levels.
for this reason it is recommended and sagest yo origonally plave the patch during the day. not at night when you fall asleep and unexpectably overdose as youre not swake nor vigilant enough to take the patch off if it becomes overwhelming and verging into OD territory.
i would also recommend having a sitter the first time you apply a patch so they can keep a close sober watch on you.
