Making sure the dentist doesn't screw me over

This IS NOT a question about getting high, this is a legitimate question about pain control.

The last time I had a tooth out the dentist scripted me tylonol 3's I didn't think nothing of it until about 6 hours later and I was STILL hurting pretty badly, so the next day after taking a large amount of my pills and STILL being in Pain, I called the Dentist back, I told him I was still in pretty bad pain and the medicine was NOT working, he told me that I would need to come in again for him to look at the spot he worked on and pay ANOTHER $70, I said ABSOLUTELY NOT!! I paid him for the work he did and the meds he scripted did not cover the pain and that he needed to get me something that WILL, he told me that all he could do either way is script me MORE tylonol 3 and he couldn't give me anything stronger. I knew this was a lie, so I said forget it!.,

so NOW, I have a pretty bad abcess in another tooth and will need to get it pulled fairly soon, I need to MAKE SURE that the Dentist I choose will script me something strong enough for the pain, I need to find this out before I pick which dentist I want to do the job because I will base my decision on this and the price of it. So should I tell this Dentist about my past experience and get his assurance that he'll script me something stronger? I realize this might look like drug seeking to some dentists but honestly THEY work for ME not the other way around and I am NOT willing to Let them shortchange me and leave me in pain I WILL NOT leave this up to chance, so do you guys have any better Ideas of how I can MAKE SURE to get something stronger than Tylonol 3, which I know from Experience will not work.

Check in advance. Here dentists can prescribe a much more limited range of pain killers and in smaller quantities than doctors. If you know in advance what your dentist can/will prescribe then you can arrange alternative pain relief with your doctor if necessary.

im in the same boat as you. i went to the doctor yesterday and the towel head gave me tylenol 3's. still in mass pain. my tooth is cracked in HALF and has the nerve exposed. just BREATHING is agonizing. what i have always done to get perk 10s, even since i was 15, right when u wake up or go under nitrous, i always tell him "my last dentist gave me perk 10's, and only seem to work. i am allergic to hydrocodone" (im not but prefer oxy over hydro) and they always give me perk 10s doing that. dont make it obvious saying, u no, u NEED the oxys, nothing else works. just say "oxy 10s seem to work the best," u know?

I've had a good deal of dental work done, and actually am going to the dentist today. I usually tell them I have a weird reaction to codeine beforehand, if it's a procedure where they are discussing that they will give me pain meds after (tooth pulled, etc). And I usually get told "umm, we don't give anything out weaker than hydrocodone, if that doesn't help call us and we'll write a prescription for something stronger and you can just come grab it." It's not a lie that codeine keeps me up and makes me uncomfortable either.

bpayne, I also had an abscess and had a tooth pulled back in May, I got hydro 7.5s for it from a college dental school which I actually thought was overkill since it didn't really hurt all too bad for all too long.

My advice --- try finding an oral surgeon to do it, not a regular dentist (I didn't think regular dentists even pulled teeth anymore). They understand how much it hurts and IME are not hesitant to prescribe you something that will actually help the pain. And you should NOT have to pay for the dentist to take a look at it during healing, those type of follow-ups should be included in the cost...I never paid for additional appointments even when going to a rather pricy oral surgeon for two rather painful oral surgeries.

^^aint that the truth. maybe a little more. its the worse pain ive felt and i been shot dealin shr00mz

Fuck. I remember when I got my wisdom teeth pulled (they were pretty bad, had to drill the bottom ones to tiny pieces then suction them out. Look at gruesome youtube videos of it). I told my maxofacial surgeon I needed extra opiates because I had tolerance, and that I had to take opiates during the week for my anesthesia (pentathol + midazolam + demerol) to work properly because I was on suboxone .

So they put me under. And I ended up being awake for the entire fucking surgery. With my mouth held open I kept trying to scream "demerol!" but the motherfucker was too stupid, kept giving me extra midazolam when I knew that wasn't what was keeping me awake. I swear to god this motherfucker thought benzos were opiates or something. No matter how many benzos they put me on I would keep waking up because of the pain, when I was done I was able to walk, without any help, which was a total surprise to them.

They said they had never seen anyone as tolerant as me to drugs. I told them "I needed more demerol, not midazolam." I also got a weak script to 5mg oxies, so I had to go out on my own to get extra medication from the streets. When I called to get more medicine, the doctor was a total prick to me because he knew I was a junkie, as so many doctors behave.

yes well, I believe that I will attempt to get them to agree at least to a hydro script before I HIRE them for the Job there are LOTS of dentists in my Area and I will not be shortchanged and Left in pain like before, I'll keep calling and asking questions until I find one that suits my needs, that last experience pissed me off, I think that if a doc or a dentist tries to pull that crap again I might go up there shoot that fucker, take all the opiates out of there and leave him in pain. but thats not a good idea and just my impulsive self acting out, anyways so do U think asking them about it before I hire them is a good idea?

No. Buy some opiates off of the black market, you might not be able to trust the dentist even if he does promise to give you painkillers. Have your bases covered beforehand, and do it behind the doctors back. Just make sure you are not high while going under anesthesia, and if you are be honest about it. It's not worth dying for.

Doctors are never sympathetic towards drug addicts in my experience. It's not even worth the shot.

It is complty up to the dentist and how tight regulations are with controlled perscrtiptions in your area. When I got my wisdom teeth removed I got 20 10mg hydros with 1 refill.

Yeah, well I kinda don't have any of my Opiate connects anymore, I pretty much stopped doing pills for recreation, so now It'll just be as needed for pain relief so I couldn't buy pills on the black market if I wanted to at this point, I just need to make sure that the dentist gives me something effective, ya know, THEY work for ME not the other way around, so if one doesn't meet MY requirements from the phone interview then it's on to the next one, and so on and so on...

Just try to explain your situation honestly to the dentist without comeing acrosss as a drugie in his eyes.

tell them you are allergic to t3s they should give you percs.

ive never even been given painkillers for a pulled tooth, except my wisdom teeth. they gave me t3s then. try taking a ibuprofen with your T3 and it will probably relieve the pain alot better

Very true.

Ibuprofen combined with even hydro or oxy will help the pain, as it reduces swelling. I had a dental implant back in the mid-nineties, and it became infected down to the bone. The hydro alone was barely touching the pain, but my aunt, who is a registered nurse, suggested combining my doses with ibu, & the relief was immense. (The oral sugeon who had done the implant was awesome, though. When I went back to see him the following Monday, and had told him about how much pain I'd been in over the weekend, he told me that, going forward, I should call him regardless of the day/time, as he did not like his patients being in any pain. He wound up doing a LOT of dental work for me. I hope the OP can find a dentist like this guy!)

yes I find naproxen sodium helps a lot, I ended up relying on that with the T3, it helped more than the t3 alone but I was still pretty sore, during this abcess I was taking monsterous doses of Naproxen and Ibuprofen along with Tramadol and it was like taking a sugar pill did absolutely nothing for some reason.

Just ask on the phone, "are you willing to give adequate pain relief to my needs?" Say that last time you were left with something that didn't work and that the dentist didn't help give you something else for the pain. Just tell him the most important thing to you is getting proper pain relief.

The problem is that they may take this the other way and think your asking for drugs. But they also could look at it as if it were true...as it is, right?

I'm so glad you're finally getting this taken care of. How are things on the home front? Send me a message via Facebook or through here and I'll tell ya just what to say. My computer is fucked right now so I'm operating on my iPhone.
