So I found a few sites that I believe are legit and have gotten up to the stage of making payment but am confused by the whole checking signatures and public keys thing can someone who is good with this stuff please help

There are guides all over the internet, or try a crypto-beginners type forum.

Don't rush into it, do plenty of research first. And get your 'heroin' tested
