Majority of Americans Oppose Legalizing Marijuana

^ Except when the US donates to other countries, there are always serious strings attached.
"Only if you elect the leader who supports US policies"
"Only if you don't use the money for condoms/abortions"
etc.
Which leaves the US down somewhere around number 73, between South Africa and the Philippines.

once all the old people die the generation that was younger i think still will be in favor of legalization and it will happen then. just a matter of time

But the people over 30 now are the hippies from the 1960's! The same ones who proclaimed a new era on earth, with free sex and drugs for all!!! 8o

Think about it - it won't change. Once the people who are 20 now are 40, they will become conservative, narrow-minded bastards, just like the current 40 year olds (with, needless to say, some glaring exceptions, such as myself:)).

It's basically this. Those who have tried marijuana, know it's a benign plant with actual medical applications. Those who have not tried marijuana, fear it.

The southern republican states are what fuck up the poll numbers. I bet if they didn't include anyone from Utah, MS, KY, AL, GA, or TX in the poll, the results would have been much different. Also, all the retirement communities in FL should probably be excluded...

What I don't understand is how people think that if marijuana is legalized, it will be everywhere. It's not like people are going to be puffing up in churches and kids are going to start smoking at the age of 7 in elementary school. I really think that the people who smoke will continue to smoke and the people who don't smoke will continue to not smoke. The only thing that will change is that our prisons and jails will be much much less crowded. I don't know about you, but I prefer rapists and murderers to complete their time in prison rather than letting them out early because we need more room for the pot dealer who just got 10 years.

I do not even smoke but the people who oppose it just irritate me.. mainly because they don't really know why they oppose it, they just do.

Not all the people from the 60's were hippies. And the 80's was a conservative time (Ronald Reagan). Were actually on average more liberal these days than the average people from the 60's.

When I am super pissed about this issue I like to pack a large bowl and blast John Mayer- Waiting on the World to Change. Basically we wait for the old people to die and then we take over.

Yea the hippies were sell outs. A lot of the yippies ended up becoming stock brokers. I think the times definitely changed some things, a lot of it I think had to do with MLK and drugs and birth control, at the same time there were a lot of people who reacted to this. There were also the 80s. I think some of it can be related to Winston Churchill's quote, when people are young they are liberal, when they get older and age chips away at their brain cells they become even more intellectually lazy(republican). At the same time, I do think once the next generation takes over some antiquated ideas will be put on the shelf. I mean were kind of the first generation to see that our parents were chalk full of shit. God I am so tired of old people telling me they fought in Vietnam so that I could be free. How did your going to South East Asia and killing a bunch of Communists do anything to ensure my freedom. You fucking lost! Or does my freedom equate to foolish hegemony of the United States.

In my opinion old people become conservative because they don't want to see their money given away to people that didn't earn it. When people are young they aren't as concerned with money and are more concerned with things such as the environment, social justice, and respecting peoples lifestyle choices. But when you get old its all about taxes and money.

How old are you and where are you from? I imagine making that statement your older then 40, and either a resident of the USA or UK. Not exactly the most diverse epistemic perspective. Many older people in places like Canada, Deutschland, other Scandinavian countries, and elsewhere I'm sure don't follow the trend you mention. My oma is 70 and I speculate she actually does more to reduce her carbon footprint than 95% of Obama voters. She's some what apolitical, but she has a deep respect for others right to be who they want to be, and volunteers with the less fortunate. Love my oma... A. one needs to distinguish between social conservatism and economic conservatism. In the context of the article we are discussing social conservatism, which has no ties to economic conservatism as evident in Republican pork barrel spending. I'll just leave it at that, go back to your Glen Beck...

This thread is about Americans dumbass not your grandma from france. I was talking about Americans views. I am not a conservative I am a libertarian. So I don't watch any Glenn Beck or Fox News.

I'm sorry if I offended you or your relatives. I'm sure you guys are nice people.

A. I live in the States, so I'm quite fit to discuss american politics, not that you guys own the concept of being conservative. Besides you were responding to a quote(paraphrase(o:) from Winston Churchill. Also, my grandma is German, hence the oma. I believe the french call their grandma's Mémère or meme or as I would refer to her grand maman(only because I'm a pedant).
B. My post kind of hinted at the uselessness of such labels. By what criteria do you establish liberal or conservative. Can one be socially liberal but economically conservative? etc. But libertarians meet my criteria for conservative wackadoodle, and I suspect if you polled much of Glenn Beck's audience a great number would respond affirmatively when asked if they were libertarians.
C. How do you figure me a dumbass?
D. You didn't really respond to the context of my post you merely dismissed everything I had to say because I didn't limit the discussion to what Americans think(the last two words are somewhat of an oxymoron, for example look in the mirror).
E. You did not offend either of us I assure you. We feel bad for you because god gave you an inadequate prefrontal cortex.

If they legalize weed then they should use that marijuana tax money and start deporting all border hoppers.. They are a big enough debt on society already

*Majority of Americans Oppose Legalizing Marijuana*

If it's true, then that's because those people are brainwashed and ignorant. I really don't believe that poll though. On CNN there was the same poll and 95% said they approve for legalization.

This is directed to other people reading this thread as I am done speaking with you: Libertarians are very socially liberal. The majority of them believe in legalizing ALL drugs, allowing legal prostitution, legal physician assisted suicide, complete separation of church and state, legal gambling, etc.

lol way to mangle a quote bro.

WCH said:
“If you're not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you're not a conservative at forty you have no brain.”
Basically he's saying almost exactly the opposite of what you said.

It was done with a degree of sarcasm. I could care a less what he had to say, I really don't know many conservatives who meet my criteria for "having a brain". Those that do are either purely economic conservatives, or delusional. I mean name me Noam Chomskys conservative counter part? I'm so tired of the tea party assholes talking about how they want a free market, but they want their jobs to stay in the US. They want to reduce the deficit, but don't you dare reduce military spending because heaven forbid we don't have our jet planes to defend us from Al Qaeda's jet planes. Did you know that taxes are lower then they were under Reagan? Die spinnen die amerikaner.

^ While I agree with your political sentiments in large part, I think you are making a mistake in simply dismissing all conservatives as being stupid.

For an enlightening discussion of why conservatives and liberals think differently - though neither is necessarily more intelligent, they simply follow different models of understanding life and government - check out this lecture from UC Berkeley prof George Lakoff:

Quite right Weekender. It's all about your constitutional right to do as you please to your self (or own body) as long as that doesn't impact the "freedoms" of others.

Up until the 60's this was our Constitutional right. Thank Tricky Dick Nixon for changing that. They (the Gov) had tried in the 1915 with the Harrison act, but that was really just a "stamp act", meaning that one had to register and pay a tax on drug sales. Of course as soon as one did, they were targeted and arrested on other BS.

True Liberatarians are very liberal and believe (as the name states) in LIBERTY and the freedom to as you please to your own body period. Thus, all drugs would be legal as they were pre-Harrison act. No scripts controlled by the AMA and your friendly Doctor. Just walk into your local Phamacy or Apothicary and buy what you wanted. Bayer Heroin?, yep in aisle 3 next too the Laudenum. Muchos gracias Senior Phamacist.

Was ther more drug addict then? Nope. As a matter of fact, the percentage of addicts was exactly the same as it is now per capita. What does that tell you? It tells me that there is always going to be a percentage of the public that is going to use, legal or not. So why not make it all legal and certain restrictions (like driving and drinking ). You take away the black market and insure quality control. You tax it the same as they do alcohol. Will it ever happen? Nope, probably not in our liftimes. Why? Same as it's always been MONEY. As I type, the USA is housing more non violent drug offenders than any other country on the planet! That's America folks. land of the free.:( It's all about the money and jobs in "corrections". Jailing people in America is big business. Many prisons are now run by "for profit corporations". Not to mention all the agency's with the their hands out for "War on Drugs" money. Coast Guard, Border Patrol, Sheriffs, Local PD, State PD etc..etc.....Hell if they made all drugs legal tomorrow, the police state that we're becoming would crumble and loads of "officers" would be out of jobs. As usual, it's all about the money. :(

^ Also, the government maintains the drug monopoly for big pharma so they can make their billions selling patented factory drugs. Intelligence agencies also use the illicit drug trade to fund their covert operations. The government has reasons for keeping the drug war going and it's not about drugs. It's about building a security state where the government and wealthy elite are protected from the people they are robbing.

Some republicans are claiming to be libertarian but aren't. O-Reilly is one of them. I have never seen him take a libertarian stance on any issue ever. He is a big government republican. These guys give us a bad name. They just don't want to call themselves Republican because people don't like Republicans as much anymore.
