The mother of a baby allegedly killed by a 10-year-old Maine girl says she is glad the girl is charged but says the girl's mother, who was watching the baby, is really the one who needs to be held responsible.

The girl was charged Thursday with manslaughter in the death of 3-month-old Brooklyn Foss-Greenaway of Clinton, whose mother said had ingested medication and been suffocated.

The girl, who is not being identified, is the youngest person to be charged with manslaughter in Maine in at least 25 years. She is due in juvenile court in October.

Brooklyn's mother, Nicole "Nicki" Greenaway, said the 10-year-old was the baby sitter's daughter. Authorities told Greenaway her baby had ingested medication to treat attention-deficit disorder and been suffocated, she said, adding that she also saw bruises on her baby's body.

"I feel a little bit of relief that they're charging her (the sitter's) daughter at this point, but the mom really needs to be responsible. She's the one I left my daughter with," Greenaway said.

Brooklyn was in the baby sitter's care overnight in nearby Fairfield. The sitter called police early July 8 to report that the infant was not breathing, authorities said. Emergency workers who arrived minutes later reported the child was unresponsive.

Greenaway said that the 10-year-old had changed her baby's diaper in the past, but that she had told the sitter an adult needed to be present at all times. Instead, the infant, who was reportedly fussy that night, was sleeping in a portable crib in the same room as the 10-year-old, Greenaway said.

When Greenaway finally saw her daughter at a funeral home, the infant had a black eye, bruises on the bridge of her nose and marks that looked like fingerprints on her cheeks, she said.

I think the mother of the dead child is responsible because she left her baby in the care of a child.

^ Someone finally said it.
I agree.
Who the fuck would leave their 3-month old baby overnight with a 10-year old?

There could be a real reason to do so that is not mentioned in the article - cancer treatment?
If so, I might change my mind, but with this amount of information, I would also blame the dead baby's mother ( in addition to the 10-year old who killed the baby).

^ Unless I'm missing something (which is quite possible...been a long day):

i dont think the baby was prescribed medication for ADD, just that the 10 year old gave the baby medication that is used to treat ADD.

what do you do with a 10 year old who's willing to kill for comfort?

i think there is a good chance she did not mean to kill the baby. it sounds to me like the baby was crying and the 10 year olds mother didn't give a fuck enough to comfort it. so the little girl did what she thought would quiet it down. i bet the 10 year old was given ADD meds to calm down her mother had told her as much thus she correlated ADD medicine with calm. so she feeds it the pills once this fails she took more drastic action. Kids are stupid they do dumb things. She can be rehabilitated. unfortunatly she will be sent into one of our juvenile hate factories instead. but that is really here nor there.

11-year-old in US court on juvenile manslaughter charge

An 11-year-old US girl charged with juvenile manslaughter in the death of a 3-month-old baby entered a "no answer" plea on Monday.

The girl bit her nails and looked down during the hearing in Maine. Her other plea choices were "admission" and "denial."

Three-month-old Brooklyn Foss-Greenaway was staying at the girl's home in the care of the girl's mother. The mother called police on July 8 to say the infant wasn't breathing. The state hasn't released the cause of death, but the mother was told that her child ingested medication and was suffocated.

The state chose not to try the girl as an adult. If convicted as a juvenile, the maximum penalty is incarceration until age 21.

The girl's lawyer, John Martin, said he felt the manslaughter charge was "too harsh" given the girl's age.

The judge on Monday ordered a competency evaluation for the girl.

Amphetamines and methylphenidate do not generally cause respiratory failure/suffocation, the fact that someone gave a 3mos old child these drugs does not implicate the drugs as the 1' cause of death as described here, which seems to be a fairly textbook case of incredibly poor guardianship.

The U.S. criminal system is nuts. Charging a 10 year old girl with manslaughter and sending her to juvie?

The private prison system there must be well fed with money.

so the ten year old girls mother, who was actually responsible for both children gets off scott free? or did i miss something. Seems to me that the mother should be watching over the baby sittter as she baby sat. no? And now this poor child will grow up to be a criminal and permanently scarred for life. Great job all around

Lord this is terrible. I feel for all involved.
